Kevin Levrone on Ronnie Coleman: “It’s not normal strength. It’s a gift from God. Number one.”

In our recent GI Exclusive Vault releases we’ve been exploring the unused footage from Ronnie Coleman: The King. Most notably, there’s been some debate about Ronnie’s hardcore lifting lifestyle. Some, like Dorian Yates, thought it was unnecessary due to the risk. He doesn’t think the heavier weight gave Ronnie a better physique. Ronnie himself thinks it is directly responsible for his iconic physique. In our latest GI Exclusive, Kevin Levrone explains why he believes that Ronnie Coleman’s strength is beyond human and a gift from God.

Kevin Levrone makes one thing clear, there is nothing normal about Ronnie Coleman and his talents. As far as Levrone is concerned, Ronnie is a once in a lifetime athlete. His genetics are blessed beyond anything that other bodybuilders have seen. He’s not just talking about pure physique aesthetic. He’s also genetically gifted when it comes to his strength.

Ronnie Coleman admitted as much in our previous GI Exclusive Vault interview. He talks about always being naturally strong. He plays it off humbly – but Kevin Levrone explains it with much more reverence:

“He put the workload on his muscles to make them get to a level to where there were deep cuts, deep striations, and hard work. And that’s where his body prevailed. You saw that. And you can’t duplicate that. You can’t go in the gym and train like Ronnie Coleman. You won’t have a chance of looking like him.”

Yes, Ronnie Coleman did work hard. But Kevin Levrone thinks that if someone worked just as hard as him they wouldn’t get the same results. That’s what makes Ronnie a Michael Jordan or Lebron James of the bodybuilding world. It’s a near once in a lifetime event. Levrone continued:

“The things he’d do in videos with that amount of weight. It’s not normal strength. It’s a gift from God. Number one. To be able to do that.”

Kevin Levrone then expands beyond that. Ronnie was a gift not only for his own abilities but to what he gave to bodybuilding. Levrone goes on to detail how Ronnie blew open the ceiling of what was possible in the sport. That inspired an entire generation of competitors to try and match what he did. Levrone considers himself blessed to be able to compete alongside him. By being a fellow competitor during that era, it pushed the limits of everyone.

Ultimately, this is the key to what makes Ronnie Coleman such a legend. It goes beyond his own abilities or the trophies on his wall. He inspired his peers. He also inspired the generation that followed. He changed the sport and made it something more than what people thought it could be.

Kevin Levrone doesn’t bring praise lightly or over-exaggerate. But in this moment he can’t help but ramble on about how inhuman Ronnie Coleman’s contributions to the sport were. Ronnie Coleman couldn’t be Mr. Olympia forever, but his legacy can last eternally.
