Matt Mitrione: Fighters Who Take Steroids Should Be Charged With Attempted Murder

Matt Mitrione is taking a strong stance against steroid abusers.

After the Bellator MMA heavyweight Grand Prix was announced, several of the promotion’s fighters who weren’t originally included, asked to be considered alternates. Notable among those are former UFC contender Rory McDonald, who usually fights at Welterweight, and former Interim UFC Heavyweight champion Shane Carwin.

Monday on The MMA Hour, Matt Mitrione, who has already secured a place in the tournament bracket and is a favorite to win, said he has no qualms with Carwin participating….so long as he takes and passes the drug test.

“I’ll say this, anyone he fights will definitely want a drug test, that’s for certain. If he can pass that, I think anyone would be cool with fighting him. I think that’s going to be a major conversation.”

Carwin has never actually failed a drug test, but was implicated in a 2010 steroid scandal as a client who purchased anabolics from Applied Pharmacy Services, whose lead pharmacist — J. Michael Bennett — was sentenced to a four-year prison term.

Matt also contended that a fighter who tests positive PED’s in MMA should reap serious consequences.

“I believe, just let me throw this out there, I believe if anybody fights an MMA fight with steroids or anabolics in their system, they should be charged with attempted murder. If the fight actually goes on, they should be charged with attempted murder.

“Steroids affect everything, not just muscles. They affect cardio, squeezing strength, punching strength. If you know how to utilize then it’s really dangerous. Steroids affects cardio positively,” he said. “The amount of oxygen that your red blood cells carry, it increases everything across the board. If you fight with anabolic steroids in your system, if you actually have the fight, its consummated and you get popped you should be charged with attempted murder.”

Mitrione is not alone here. Ronda Rousey and Mark Hunt having suggested similar measures. But frankly they are unlikely to be adopted either by commission or promotion, as it would be extremely damaging to public image.

For now “Meathead’ will focus on his first round opponent, Roy Nelson, whom he will face on February 17, 2018.
