Mayo School Nurse Wins WNBF in Boston

This nurse has built a solid, natural physique.

Laurie Coe, a 39-year-old Mayo School Nurse became the Women’s Professional Natural Bodybuilding Lightweight World Champion this weekend at the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) World Championships in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Landmark interviewed Coe, who won third place in the Women’s Heavyweight Division at last year’s WNBF Competition in California and first place overall in addition to first place in the heavyweight division of the WNBF’s Monster Mash and Pro Masters American on Nov. 5.

Coe’s serious devotion to bodybuilding began when she earned her pro status, placing first in a high level competition after college. She became certified in personal training, but not long after decided to start a family and so took a hiatus from the sport.

In 2016 Coe decided to rededicate herself.

“I was ready to do something for myself again,” she said.

For the last 14 weeks, Coe has woken up at 5 a.m. every day. Her workouts were 40 minutes of weight training to start the day and an hour walk at the end of the day.

Coe’s diet consisted of lean, low glycemic foods.

Breakfasts were five egg whites and one whole egg scrambled with spinach plus a side of ezekiel toast and almond butter and a protein shake after the morning workout. Four more meals of the day would be a variation of 5 ounces of a lean protein and some veggies.

“Food becomes a fuel and not a source of emotional anything. You are eating for energy, not for pleasure.”

She is proud of the example her discipline sets for her children.

“I like for them to see that hard work pays off and you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it,” added Coe, later noting that she likes that the sport is a “complete challenge beyond just regular life.”

“Do I want to look back and wish I didn’t eat that bagel? No. I want to stand up there [in front of the judges] and know I did everything possible to get to that moment,” said Coe. “No matter how I place in the show, I know that I did everything in my power to bring my best to the stage.”

Coe’s biggest reward was the reaction of her children:

“They are just proud and I love that.”

Now that the competition is over, Coe plans to take a little break from bodybuilding to focus on a health and wellness program for her students before her next competition.
