Mike Sommerfeld has reportedly missed weight at the 2026 Arnold Classic – preventing him from competing in the Classic Physique division

The 2026 Arnold Classic has already delivered a major shock for bodybuilding fans. Reigning champion Mike Sommerfeld reportedly did not make weight for the Classic Physique division during the official check-in at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio – according to accounts from those who attended the weigh-in.

As of now, neither Sommerfeld nor his team have made an official statement. The International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness and the Arnold Classic organizers have also not released a formal announcement. However, multiple sources present at the event have begun sharing details about what may have happened during the weigh-in process.

According to reports from individuals on the ground, Sommerfeld entered the weigh-in expecting to be re-measured for height. That assumption appears to have played a major role in how he prepared his final stage weight.

Alleged Height Miscalculation Leads to Weight Miss

Classic Physique competitors must meet strict height and weight limits. These rules are designed to maintain the aesthetic proportions that define the division. Athletes are assigned a maximum weight based on their official height measurement.

Sources claim that Sommerfeld believed he would be re-heighted at the Arnold Classic weigh-in. Because of this expectation, he reportedly targeted a weight that matched the higher weight allowance he thought he would receive after the measurement.

The plan was built around meeting the Classic Physique guidelines. But the re-height did not happen.

Without a new measurement, Sommerfeld’s previously recorded height remained in effect. That meant the weight limit was lower than what he prepared for. Sources currently claim that Sommerfeld came in approximately seven pounds over the allowed limit for his height class.

If accurate, this would make him ineligible to compete in the Classic Physique division at the 2026 Arnold Classic.

A Major Blow for Fans

The news comes as a huge surprise to fans of the sport. Sommerfeld entered the 2026 Arnold Classic as the clear favorite in the Classic Physique lineup.

His momentum was strong after winning the Arnold Classic title in 2025. That victory solidified his status as one of the top athletes in the division and positioned him as a leading contender in every major show he entered.

Sommerfeld has built a reputation for elite conditioning, balanced proportions, and a polished stage presence. Those traits have made him one of the most consistent threats in Classic Physique over the past several seasons.

Because of that success, many fans expected him to defend his title in Columbus this year. Missing the weight limit would remove one of the division’s biggest stars from the stage.

Rumors of a Possible Men’s Open Invitation

Another rumor circulating at the Arnold Classic venue suggests a possible alternative path for Sommerfeld.

Some sources claim that Sommerfeld may receive a special invitation to compete in the IFBB Pro League Men’s Open division at the Arnold Classic. However, reports from different individuals at the event conflict with one another. As of now, there is no confirmation that such an invitation has been offered.

Competing in Men’s Open would present a very different challenge. The division has no height-based weight limits and typically features much heavier athletes focused on maximum muscle mass.

While Sommerfeld is known for his impressive physique, he has built his career around the Classic Physique category, which emphasizes symmetry, aesthetics, and classic bodybuilding lines.

Whether he would choose to step into the Open lineup on short notice remains unclear.

Mike Sommerfeld’s Bodybuilding Career

Sommerfeld has steadily risen through the ranks of professional bodybuilding in recent years. Originally from Germany, he developed a strong fan base in both Europe and the United States thanks to his classic structure and detailed conditioning.

His physique fits the core vision of the Classic Physique division. Wide shoulders, a tight waist, and balanced muscle development have helped him stand out against some of the division’s best competitors.

Before winning the Arnold Classic in 2025, Sommerfeld had already established himself as a top contender on major stages. He consistently placed near the top at high-profile IFBB Pro League shows and earned recognition for his ability to peak at the right moment during competition prep.

The Arnold Classic victory marked the biggest title of his career and elevated his profile across the bodybuilding world. Winning that show placed him in the same conversation as some of the most respected athletes in Classic Physique.

What’s Next?

At this stage, the bodybuilding community is still waiting for official clarification. Neither Sommerfeld nor the Arnold Classic organizers have confirmed the reports surrounding the weigh-in.

Until a formal statement is released, much of the information circulating remains based on sources present at the event.

Still, if the reports prove accurate, it will mark one of the most surprising developments of the 2026 Arnold Classic weekend. A returning champion missing weight would dramatically change the landscape of the competition.

Fans now wait to see whether Sommerfeld addresses the situation publicly and whether any last-minute opportunities emerge for him to compete in Columbus this weekend.

Regardless of the outcome, the story has already become one of the most talked-about moments of the 2026 Arnold Classic.
