The two-time Ms. Figure America champion discusses motherhood, reclaiming her title, and her road back to the 2026 Mr. America stage.

Riane Hughes has already proven she knows how to make a comeback. Now, the two-time Ms. Figure America champion is preparing to return to the Mr. America stage with another opportunity to add to a journey that has included more than 10 championship titles, motherhood, and a return to competition after stepping away from the sport.

Hughes first began competing in bodybuilding in 2018 and earned professional status at her first amateur figure competition in the OCB in 2019. Over the next three years, she collected more than 10 championship titles, highlighted by winning Ms. Figure America in 2022.

Shortly after that victory, Hughes learned she was pregnant with her daughter, Mila. She stepped away from competition to focus on motherhood before beginning her comeback in October 2024. The return quickly gained momentum. Hughes regained her OCB pro card, won an ANBF pro title, and reclaimed the Ms. Figure America crown in 2025.

What Is Mr. America?

The Mr. America bodybuilding competition is the flagship event of the Mr. America All-American Sports Festival, which brings together athletes across bodybuilding and multiple strength sports.

The 2026 Mr. America All-American Sports Festival will take place Oct. 9-11 at the Tropicana Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The bodybuilding competition features amateur and professional athletes across divisions including Bodybuilding, Figure, Bikini, Physique, Classic Physique, and Wellness.

Bodybuilding prejudging and finals are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tropicana Atlantic City.

Hughes enters this year’s competition as the reigning Ms. Figure America champion and is looking to continue a comeback that began less than two years ago.

Generation Iron spoke with Hughes ahead of her return to the Mr. America stage about motherhood, reclaiming her title, working with coach Melody Farkas, and what she hopes to accomplish in 2026.

Generation Iron Interview With Riane Hughes

You first competed in bodybuilding in 2018 and went pro at your very first amateur show in 2019. Looking back, what do you remember most about those early days, and what initially drew you to bodybuilding?

It all began when I went to a bodybuilding show just as a spectator. I saw muscles, sparkly bikinis, and a performance. I immediately caught the bug! I truly appreciated the amount of dedication it takes to get to that level and I felt a fire starting to burn. As a person with a long history of athletic training and a little bit of competitive dancing experience, this met my inner child right when I needed it the most!

You went on to win more than 10 championship titles, including Ms. Figure America in 2022. What did winning that title mean to you at that stage of your career?

Every win feels like my very first one! I’m not sure I have ever gone into a competition with an abundance of confidence. I might not show it, but I feel it! So, each win is an absolute shock and I just have the most gratitude for my placings. I never try to hold too much weight on the outcome as I stay true to the “you vs. you” mentality. My 2022 title means so much to me, especially what followed shortly after.

After winning Ms. Figure America in 2022, you discovered that you were pregnant with your daughter, Mila. How did becoming a mother change your perspective on bodybuilding and your competitive career?

Motherhood has taught me to give myself more grace in health, fitness, and competitive bodybuilding. How can I expect my daughter to have positive self talk if I’m my own harshest critic? Showing her how important it is to take care of her physical and mental health is a top priority. I need her to see what is possible when you prioritize yourself!

This is something that wasn’t a priority before motherhood. It has also shown me that I can absolutely take a few years off, have a baby, come back and go up on stage! Women are so resilient and they exist all over the bodybuilding community.

You took time away from competition to focus on motherhood. Was there ever a point during that time when you questioned whether you would return to the stage?

I had zero doubt I’d be back up on stage. I just had to take it step by step. I continued training smart throughout pregnancy to gear myself up for some serious recovery in postpartum. Once things felt safe to push heavy, we did. After one year postpartum, we hit the gas in 2024 on our road to Mr. America 2025 and made some history!

What ultimately made you decide that it was time to begin your comeback in October 2024?

I decided early in pregnancy that I’d give myself at least a full year to adjust to the new normal. I was inching closer to that year mark and hit a point where I realized I had already lost myself. Who am I? What happened to me? I made a promise to myself and I had to stick to it. It was time for my daughter to see who her mommy really is!

The Comeback

Your return has been remarkably successful. In 2025, you regained your OCB pro card, won an ANBF pro title, and reclaimed your Ms. Figure America title. Did you expect your comeback to move this quickly?

Absolutely not! I had hopes and dreams but I didn’t want to set such high expectations. One goal at a time. First goal was to just get back up on stage. Once I got the jitters out, it was on. We were going back for that title again! The momentum pushed us all the way to the end, the DREAM.

What was different about the Riane Hughes who returned to competition in 2025 compared with the athlete who won Ms. Figure America in 2022?

We’re talking about two entirely different versions of myself as an athlete. Still very dedicated and determined but a more mature version now. 2022 season was powered by my inability to be 100% coachable. It was hard for me to let go of control of the process.

I felt that if I truly let someone take lead of my personal journey, they wouldn’t handle it with as much passion as I expected. That’s not fair. Nothing like getting humbled by a pregnancy to make you realize accepting guidance is in my best interest as an athlete. I have evolved from my original mindset.

You teamed up with coach Melody Farkas for your comeback. What has that partnership brought to your preparation, and what have you learned from working with her?

Wow, I could probably do a whole interview just talking about my history with Melody! Melody and I actually competed at Mr. America in 2022 in different divisions. From there we connected and I started following her journey and felt very aligned with her practices.

She’s not only a successful bodybuilder, she’s also a mom of multiples! Just an amazing example of who I look up to. Her personal bodybuilding journey is what continues to inspire me. Through her decisions and steps, I’m able to see the path from her perspective. A well accomplished natural competitor to an IFBB Pro!

Will I have the same outcome? I can’t say for sure, but what I can say with confidence is I dream bigger with Melody in my corner.

When you stepped back onstage and ultimately reclaimed the Ms. Figure America title, what went through your mind in that moment?

I don’t know if I can truly describe how I felt or what was going through my mind, but I can say vindication met me in that moment in so many ways as an athlete but also as a first-time mommy. I had just done something that was simply a dream one year prior!

The only real sound I could hear after the crown was placed on my head was “mommy” shouting from the crowd. It still makes me emotional! I can say with confidence, my next thought after that was, “I gotta call my mom!” She unfortunately could not be there in person but the phone call was exactly what you’d expect, very emotional and very supportive!

Preparing For The 2026 Mr. America

What specifically are you working to improve in your physique heading into the 2026 competition?

This year we decided to take a different approach to bring in a more full look compared to last year. I had lost 60 pounds in my transformation and road to Mr. America last year. We didn’t need to do that this year. I can say with confidence that this season has been the most controlled and intentional by far and I cannot wait to see what we bring this year!

How has your preparation for Mr. America differed from the preparation that led to your 2025 Ms. Figure America victory?

The variables are totally different this year. We got the jitters out coming off of postpartum last year. With that under our belt, we knew exactly how to move for this season.

Being that I had to get my pro card back, I had a few shows lined up before Mr. America last year. This year, Mr. A is my first show! So in a way, very different timeline. No practice shows before this one!

What has been the biggest challenge of this particular prep so far?

It’s always life outside of this whole bodybuilding gig. In the last year I have personally dealt with lost loved ones, family health scares, lost working opportunities, changed gyms, and faced work challenges. But I’m not alone in this.

Going through the process of competitive bodybuilding forces you to face some incredibly hard situations. That is just life! Both are constant and existing within the same universe but also, we can acknowledge the vast differences between them. Both extremely difficult in their own!

Is there a specific aspect of your posing or presentation that you’ve been putting extra emphasis on for this competition?

Posing is a craft! I think most successful bodybuilders understand this is a non-negotiable practice. I wouldn’t say there’s anything in particular other than working on poses that better complement my physique. Your posing will change with your physique changing!

Adding on size or coming in more conditioned will force you to always work on your posing. Poses that worked for you last year might not look as impressive this year, and on the opposite, give it a year or two and you might just be ready for that pose you couldn’t land!

When it comes down to my routines, just expect more of a performance. That’s just my particular style!

The Competitive Mindset

What motivates you now that you’ve already accomplished so much in the sport?

It’s less about motivation and more about my identity and who I’m happy being. If it doesn’t align with my goals and my identity, we don’t entertain it. The motivation is just by my drive to be the absolute best version of myself as an athlete and a mother.

Has your definition of success changed since becoming a mother?

Absolutely! Success isn’t defined by an award. It’s your character and the practices you take along the way that defines your success.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about making a comeback in bodybuilding after taking significant time away from competition?

I think most people would assume taking time off to have a baby is an ultimate sacrifice and dead end for a competitor. In some cases that is true. In most cases, it’s not.

There’s a long line of history in the business of coming back to compete after a pregnancy. And in some sort of odd way, pregnancy was exactly the amount of time I needed off from the sport to give my body a break.

Now, I don’t recommend getting pregnant just so you can have an offseason! Take your time off and grow! I am so looking forward to my growing season in 2027!

Looking Toward The Stage

What do you believe is the strongest part of your physique heading into this competition?

I aim for it all to be the strongest but I’ll entertain the question…legs and back!

What would you consider a successful Mr. America experience for yourself, regardless of where you ultimately place?

I have this mindset for every show, at least top three. If we get the win, that’s awesome but it’s not the defining factor to success!

Finally, when fans see Riane Hughes step onstage at the 2026 Mr. America, what do you hope they take away from your story?

I hope people are genuinely happy to see my resilience at every stage of life! I try to be as open as possible about my journey and share my life on social media for anyone to peep in.

Those who have been witnessing the wild ride of my life should definitely feel the wins with me and let that influence their lives in every aspect.
