Roy Jones Jr. Readies For His Last Fight

One of the greatest boxers of all time, Roy Jones Jr., finally plans to retire next month at the age of 49- after one last fight.

Roy Jones’ final bout will be in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida under the promotional banner Island Fights 46.

Jones told ESPN:

“You should call it my last day at the Bay. It’s my last one for the Bayfront, Civic Center, Pensacola, Bayfront Arena, whatever you want to call it.

“So if you want to come to see my last day in Pensacola, be there Feb. 8. That’s my last one there.”

Jones (65-9, with 47 Knockouts) won 11 of his last 12 fights, the most recent being a stoppage win over Bobby Gunn almost a year ago. Jones still looks capable in the ring, although he has been on the losing end of some brutal KO’s since Antonio Tarver snapped his winning streak back in 2004. Roy also works as a commentator for HBO boxing.

At the peak of his powers, Roy Jones Jr. was electric. He had the vision and physical skill of a savant, combined with an ornery nature and penchant for showmanship which made him a terrifying highlight reel generator in the ring. He would have been a gold medalist at the 1988 Olympics if corruption had not seated him with silver, and he is undoubtedly one of the greatest Heavyweights of all time.

Jones’ opponent will be a journeyman named Scott Sigmon (30-11-1, with 16 Knockouts). Sigmon has faced many top level fighters in his career, including Luis Arias, Caleb Truax, Ronald Gavril.

The weightclass for this bout is still undecided. Likely it will be at or just below 200 pounds (cruiserweight) where Jones has fought most recently, as Sigmon is most comfortable in the 175 class (light heavyweight). This should be an excellent contest if not an elite one. The fight is well matched and it will be the last chance to catch a legend in the ring. Jones is a shoe-in for the boxing hall of fame, and will likely be inducted soon after his retirement.
