Is this a future Mr. Olympia?

Sergey Danilov is one of the fastest-rising names in modern bodybuilding. Known for his massive frame, intense work ethic, and old-school approach to training, the Russian bodybuilder has quickly become one of the most talked-about athletes in the IFBB Pro League Men’s Open division.

From overcoming a career-ending hockey injury to building a professional bodybuilding career, Danilov’s journey has been defined by discipline, sacrifice, and an obsession with improving his physique. After earning his IFBB Pro card in 2024 and winning the Tsunami Showdown France Pro in 2025, Sergey Danilov has emerged as a legitimate contender on the road to the Mr. Olympia stage.

Our team at Generation Iron is going to break it down.

Sergey Danilov Early Life

Sergey Danilov was born on August 25, 1995, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Raised by his mother, Sergey grew up with a strong connection to sports from an early age.

Before becoming a bodybuilder, Danilov pursued hockey and competed as a goalie for the Dynamo hockey club. The sport helped develop his athletic foundation, discipline, and competitive mindset. However, a serious injury forced him to step away from hockey and close the door on his first athletic career.

Like many elite bodybuilders, Sergey’s competitive nature did not disappear after leaving his original sport. Instead, he redirected that same intensity into bodybuilding.

Sergey Danilov’s Introduction to Bodybuilding

Sergey Danilov began bodybuilding at 18 years old, immediately approaching the sport with the same extreme dedication that defined his hockey career.

However, his early years in bodybuilding came with challenges. Danilov has spoken openly about pushing himself too hard during his transition into the sport, eventually suffering a heart attack at age 18.

“I was working like a madman — no vacations, no real rest. I left one sport and jumped into the new one with the same fanaticism,” Sergey explained in an interview.

After collapsing and being taken to the hospital, Danilov realized he needed to prioritize recovery and long-term health. While he has continued pursuing bodybuilding at the highest level, he has stated that he regularly monitors his health and receives medical checkups.

From 2012 through 2015, Sergey trained and competed continuously before taking a break from bodybuilding in 2016 and 2017. During this period, he stepped away from competition before returning to the gym in 2018 with renewed motivation.

Sergey Danilov’s Rise in Bodybuilding

Sergey first began gaining attention in the bodybuilding community in 2014 when he appeared on the IRONRATING YouTube channel’s “Monsters from ALMAZ” episode.

At the time, Danilov was training at ALMAZ Gym alongside other rising Russian bodybuilding talents, including Alexey Lesukov. His work ethic and potential quickly caught the attention of coaches and fans.

Coach Andrey Prokofiev played a major role in Sergey’s development. Prokofiev, who also coached Alexey Lesukov, helped guide Danilov during his early bodybuilding career and continued working with him as he climbed through the amateur ranks.

Danilov has credited Alexey Lesukov as one of his biggest inspirations.

According to Sergey, Lesukov proved that success in bodybuilding was possible through hard work and dedication, regardless of background or circumstances.

“He showed us that anything is possible. He’s a guy from a small town, no connections, nothing. Just pure work since he was a kid,” Sergey said about Lesukov’s influence.

Sergey Danilov’s Competitive Bodybuilding Career

Danilov began competing seriously in bodybuilding around 2013 and quickly established himself as one of Russia’s promising young athletes.

2018 Russian Junior Championship

One of Sergey Danilov’s biggest early victories came in 2018 when he won the Russian Junior Championship. At that competition, he defeated another future bodybuilding star, Vitaly “GoodVito” Ugolnikov.

The victory helped establish Danilov as a name to watch in Russian bodybuilding.

2020 Russian Championship Appearance

In 2020, Sergey made headlines during the Russian Championship check-in when he arrived displaying his massive offseason physique.

Although he was not competing in peak condition, his size immediately caught attention. Coach Vyacheslav Ugrinov later recalled that Danilov’s appearance intimidated many athletes backstage.

2023 Siberian Power Show

After winning an amateur competition in 2023, Danilov advanced to the Siberian Power Show final, one of Russia’s notable bodybuilding events.

He finished second place behind Alexander Martynkin, continuing to build momentum toward earning professional status.

2024 NPC Worldwide International Classic Pro

The biggest breakthrough of Sergey Danilov’s career came in 2024 when he won the NPC Worldwide International Classic Pro.

The victory earned him his IFBB Pro League card and officially opened the door for him to compete against the world’s best Men’s Open bodybuilders.

2025 IFBB Pro Debut

Danilov made his professional debut in June 2025 at the Huanji China Pro in Beijing.

Facing an experienced lineup of professional athletes, Sergey finished fourth place, proving he could compete at the highest level.

Later that year, Danilov achieved his biggest career victory by winning the Tsunami Showdown France Pro in Lille. The win secured his qualification for the Mr. Olympia competition and cemented him as one of bodybuilding’s rising stars.

Sergey Danilov’s Training Routine

Sergey Danilov is known for his intense training style and high-volume approach.

Coming from a hockey background, Sergey developed significant lower-body strength early in his athletic career. He has said that legs became one of his favorite muscle groups to train.

His typical training split includes six training days per week, with Sunday used as a rest day.

His routine:

  • Chest
  • Hamstrings
  • Arms
  • Back and shoulders
  • Legs
  • Additional training day

While many bodybuilders enjoy training upper body, Sergey has admitted that upper-body workouts are often more challenging mentally compared to leg training.

His hockey background helped him build a strong foundation, especially in his legs, allowing him to transition into bodybuilding with an already developed athletic base.

Sergey Danilov’s Diet and Nutrition

Building a massive Men’s Open bodybuilding physique requires an extreme level of commitment outside the gym, and Danilov’s diet reflects that dedication.

During his growth phases, Sergey has consumed over 7,000 calories per day while eating seven to eight meals daily.

A typical meal plan has included:

  • Pasta
  • Eggs
  • Turkey
  • High-protein foods
  • Multiple meals spaced throughout the day

One unique aspect of Sergey’s nutrition is that his grandmother helps prepare his meals according to his bodybuilding diet.

Danilov has explained that his daily routine involves waking up around 5:30 a.m., working, coaching clients, training himself, and constantly preparing meals to support his growth.

Sergey Danilov Arm Wrestling Appearance

Although bodybuilding is Sergey’s primary sport, he also tested his strength in arm wrestling.

In 2024, Danilov participated in the “PO RUKAM” media project created by Kirill Sarychev. His opponent was fellow bodybuilder Anton Gerasimov, winner of the Arnold Classic Africa.

Danilov dominated the matchup, winning 3-0.

The appearance highlighted another aspect of Sergey’s athletic background and strength outside traditional bodybuilding competitions.

As Sergey Danilov continues rising through the IFBB Pro League, his popularity has grown both in Russia and internationally.

In 2026, Danilov signed a sponsorship agreement with the MARATHON investment group, expanding his presence beyond competitive bodybuilding.

With his enormous structure, competitive mindset, and recent success on the professional stage, many bodybuilding fans believe Sergey Danilov has the potential to become a major player in the Men’s Open division.

Sergey Danilov’s Bodybuilding Legacy

Sergey Danilov’s story is one of relentless ambition. From a young hockey player forced to change paths, to an amateur champion, to an IFBB Pro who qualified for the Mr. Olympia stage, his career has been built around persistence and hard work.

As bodybuilding continues entering a new era focused on extreme size and elite conditioning, Sergey Danilov represents one of the sport’s most exciting young athletes.

With his combination of size, strength, and determination, Sergey Danilov is a name bodybuilding fans will likely be watching for years to come.
