Strongman Dan Jones suffered this gruesome injury during a recent competition.
Strongman Dan Jones suffered a knee injury that forced him out of his latest competition when both kneecaps shot up into his quads.
Jones was competing at the 2024 Southport’s Strongest Man competition in Southport, England. On Sept. 1, Jones was competing in the final when he was carrying a total of 80kg a distance of 20 meters. The video shows Jones collapsing midway through the event.
“It was a freak accident. We’re still not 100% sure how it happened.”

Jones was taken to Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Cheshire where he underwent a five-hour surgery to have his tendons fused back together.
“My doctors said they needed to fuse my tendons back together and make sure my ligaments underneath my knee were where they should be. They then needed to put two sutures into my shin and build an internal brace to help my body fuse the tendon back together as best it can.”
Dan Jones Suffers Gruesome Knee Injury
The patellar tendon connects the thigh muscle to the shin bone and aids in knee movements for walking. Jones was moving quickly with the weights in hopes of winning the event to catch up to the athlete in first place. He observed the video of the incident with doctors to see how it happened.
“After slowing down the video with doctors and surgeons, it looks like my right knee patellar tendon snaps out of nowhere, which causes my left to fold underneath me. Then my left knee bends underneath me and this tendon snaps on impact.”

Dan Jones, a 29-year-old competitor from Weaverham, Cheshire, began competing in Strongman in January. He won the First Time category during the Manchester Strongman competition in July and continued to train hard to improve. He worked to compete in this latest competition and did all he could to fight for the title.
“I was very upset. I had a chance of winning. We were very near to the end with 10 meters to go in the competition. I only needed three more seconds of running to finish the event.”
Jones hopes to recover fully and get back to competition. His initial hope was to represent England in Open Strongman events but this injury might push back his timeline. For now, Jones is focused on recovering and getting back to the gym.
