IS THIS THE EPITOME OF WHAT CLASSIC PHYSIQUE SHOULD LOOK LIKE?

Generation Iron Classic Physique

Leading by example.

For the longest time the epitome of bodybuilding has always been the open weight division. Once known as the heavyweight division, it featured some of the top bodybuilding champions in history, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sergio Oliva. The re-branded open weight division ensured that any bodybuilder wishing to test their mettle and put on a massive amount of muscle could compete in the premier category of bodybuilding regardless of size and weight. But as time has already proven to us, being a lighter bodybuilder in the open weight division is just too tall a task.

If there were no categories in bodybuilding then it would be far harder to judge competitions. It’s the reason why the 212 division was invented after all. Not every man has the ability to weigh 250 lbs of solid muscle. The 212 division has given the opportunity for lighter bodybuilders to show off their impressive physiques without having to compete with athletes with a 30 lbs weight advantage. While many people may criticize the idea of having different categories in the bodybuilding, the reality is that it’s the one thing that keeps things in check.

The inclusion of the Classic Physique division has raised more than a few eyebrows, being met with both positive and negative reactions from the bodybuilding community. Where the 212 and open weight division focus more on how much muscle can be packed on to the human frame, classic physique is focused more on aesthetics reminiscent of the Golden Era of bodybuilding. The V-taper, symmetry and definition are all treated with different importance in classic physique and is a positive sign for those who hold aesthetics above musculature.

But these days it’s hard to wonder exactly what a classic physique should look like. Sure, we have an idea about what it should be but we’ve had very few actual Classic Physique competitions take place as of this moment. So until more and more competitions trickle their way into the IFBB and NPC… all we can do is try and predict what will be the “true” Classic Physique that judges and fans are looking for. That’s where IFBB pro Matt Ramseier comes in. If he is any indication on where the future of the division is headed, it’s all about proportions. Take a look at this picture below:

Is this the epitome of the classic physique? We’re still waiting for that stand out competitor to truly define what this division should look like (and are anxiously waiting for Sadik to unveil his competitive physique to the world). Until
