Tom Platz accomplished eye-opening things in the gym and he recently talked how he would enter a set.

Bodybuilding legend Tom Platz is nicknamed the “Quadfather” for a reason, and he has maintained his incredible reputation in this area at 68 years old. During the prime of his career, Platz would take on legendary workouts, led by his leg-day performances, in the gym. In this post we detail how Platz enters a squat session where he completed 50 reps with 405 pounds on his back.

“I can never leave the gym a loser.”

Platz built some of the best legs in bodybuilding and his impact remains large to this day. Many continue to take on some of his legendary workouts but his 50-rep set with 405 pounds is as impressive as it gets.

Tom Platz Talks Mentality Of Completing 50 Reps

Tom Platz discussed his mentality when entering a set in the gym. If he wanted to take on a large amount of reps in any set, he would break it down into smaller quantities.

“When I did 405 for 50, I could never imagine it. It was too many reps to think about. I can’t manage that but I can manage five at a time.”

Platz would have his trainer yell out the number every five sets. This would allow him to break it down into 10 sets of five reps.

“I would do five reps and Tony would say ‘five, ten, 15, 20’ and then he’d say 25. Well, I’m halfway done. I can get 50. They would do this for me but I could manage five reps at a time. I couldn’t manage 50. In my mind, it’s like doing sets of five, 10 times.”

One of the most influential bodybuilders in the past 50 years, Tom Platz has left his mark on bodybuilding history. Always known for his massive legs, which were created through his brutal leg workouts, Platz would go on to teach many other bodybuilders throughout his career. He hoped to pass on his knowledge and ensure that countless other competitors were able to build quality legs of their own.
