WWE has announced the match-up for NXT Takeover WarGames 2019 and it’s a pretty big deal.

WWE has announced that Finn Balor and Matt Riddle will go head-to-head at the NXT Takeover WarGames 2019. The announcement came as a surprise to fans and was seen as an interesting move by some.

The original match-up for WarGames 2019 was Finn Balor v. Johnny Gargano. Ironically, it was Balor who spiked Gargano head-first onto a ramp back in October, causing a neck injury that saw him suspended from play for several months.

It was unclear up until now if Gargano’s injuries were still severe enough to warrant holding him back from competing. However, it was announced earlier this evening that he was not fit to return to the sport, and that was quickly followed by the announcement that his replacement would be Matt Riddle.

Shayna Baszler and Rhea Ripley will be the captains of the two teams facing off in the women’s branch of the tournament. Baszler will be leading Io Shirai, Bianca Belair and TBA into the fray, while Ripley while captain Candice LeRae, Tegan Nox and Mia Yim. The men’s WarGames group lineup will consist of Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong vs. Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee, Dominik Dijakovic, and TBA.

It’ll be interesting to see how this season’s competition shakes down without one of its key competitors. Tough to say with the remaining two slots still unannounced, but it’s shaping up to be a memorable match. We wish Johnny Gargano a speedy recovery!
