Fitness Creator Reveals Body Transformation After Attempting 30 Days Without Protein
Protein is one of the fundamental building blocks for muscle growth and recovery, but one fitness creator wanted to see what would happen if he eliminated it entirely. YouTuber Manuel Enrique attempted to survive 30 days without consuming a single gram of protein while maintaining roughly 3,000 calories per day. However, the challenge ended much sooner than planned after the effects began piling up.
The experiment documented changes in his physique, training performance, and overall energy, offering a dramatic look at how quickly a complete lack of dietary protein can affect an active individual.
YouTuber Ends Zero-Protein Challenge After Just 10 Days
Before beginning the challenge, Enrique consulted with a physician and underwent a DEXA scan to establish a baseline. According to the scan, he started with approximately 71.7 kilograms (158 pounds) of lean mass, giving him a clear reference point for any muscle loss during the experiment.
The biggest obstacle quickly became food selection. Enrique discovered that avoiding protein almost entirely meant relying on highly processed foods, including:
- Candy
- Pure cooking oils
- Vegan cheese substitutes with no protein
- Zero-protein sourdough bread
- Zero-protein noodles
His daily calorie intake remained close to 3,000 calories, but virtually all of those calories came from carbohydrates and fats rather than protein.
During the first couple of days, he said the challenge felt manageable. He even noticed some early weight loss, but things quickly changed.
Symptoms Began Within the First Week
As the days passed, Enrique reported a steady decline in both physical and mental performance.
According to his daily updates, the progression looked like this:
- Days 1-2: Felt relatively normal despite the unusual diet.
- Day 3: Food options became even more limited after his zero-protein bread sold out.
- Day 5: Energy levels dropped significantly as the lack of protein began taking its toll.
- Days 7-8: Experienced severe brain fog and noticeably weaker workouts.
- Day 9: Developed a significant skin breakout while continuing to struggle in training.
- Day 10: Became so weak and frustrated during a workout that he walked out in the middle of a set, ending the challenge.
Throughout the experiment, Enrique said he progressively reduced the weight he could lift as his strength declined. He also described feeling exhausted, struggling to get out of bed, and finding it increasingly difficult to train.
Doctor Warned His Body Would Turn to Muscle Tissue
Before starting the experiment, Enrique’s physician warned that completely eliminating protein could have predictable consequences.
According to the doctor, without sufficient dietary protein the body would eventually begin breaking down its own muscle tissue to obtain the amino acids needed for essential functions.
That warning aligned with Enrique’s experience as his gym performance steadily worsened throughout the challenge.
Why Protein Matters for Muscle Growth
For bodybuilders and strength athletes, protein provides the amino acids required to repair muscle tissue after training and support muscle protein synthesis. While calorie intake remained high throughout Enrique’s experiment, the absence of protein meant his body lacked one of the key nutrients needed to recover from workouts and maintain lean muscle mass.
Although this was a single self-experiment rather than a scientific study, the rapid decline in training performance and energy serves as a reminder of protein’s importance for anyone looking to build or preserve muscle.
