2023 World’s Strongest Man Day 1 Qualifier is underway – here’s our complete breakdown & live results.
The 2023 World’s Strongest Man competition is now underway – bringing together the 30 most talented strongman athletes to battle for the biggest title in the sport. This year’s event is set in Myrtle Beach, SC and runs from April 19th-23rd.
The qualifying round of the 2023 World’s Strongest Man consists of two days – running on Wednesday and Thursday. The athletes are separated into groups where they compete for points. Only 10 athletes will qualify for the finals. After a rest day on Friday, the finals stage begins running through Saturday and Sunday.
Today marks the beginning of the biggest competition in strongman. All groups competed in the loading race, deadlift machine, and log ladder. Below, you can find the results as they continue to come in from Myrtle Beach!

2023 World’s Strongest Man: Day One Qualifier Results
The first day of qualifiers featured three events — the loading race, deadlift machine, and the log ladder. This is the first day of two qualifiers where competitors will earn points in hopes of making it through to the finals over the weekend.
Through the first event, there were many familiar names at the top of the standings. Below, you can find a breakdown of each event for all five groups.
Loading Race
For the Loading Race, athletes must pick up, carry, and load five cumbersome objects onto a platform. The ultimate goal of this event is for the athletes to load these objects as quickly as possible – with fastest time earning the highest points.
The athletes leading the pack during the first event of the 2023 World’s Strongest Man were Pavlo Kordiyaka, Oleskii Novikov, Mitchell Hooper, and Jaco Schoonwinkel. Notably, returning champion Tom Stoltman fell short behind Kordiyaka trailing by just over 2 seconds.
Also notable was the withdrawal of Cheick “Iron Biby” Sanou just before the event started. He was replaced by Kristján Jón Haraldsson – who ended up landing second in his group behind former WSM champion Novikov.

Deadlift Machine
The deadlift machine is the second event at the 2023 World’s Strongest Man. It tasks athletes to lift seven progressively heavier weights ranging from 639-848 pounds. Once each athlete completes the weight – they must perform as many reps as possible within the 75 second time limit.
Bobby Thompson, Oleksii Novikov, Mitchell Hooper, Rauno Heinla, and Trey Mitchell led the pack in their respective groups. Novikov is certainly standing out to the crowd as he maintains his first place lead among the groups matched only by Mitchell Hooper at this stage in the competition. Brian Shaw also impressed by landing 8 reps despite his recent medical scare – exceeding expectations about his performance at this year’s WSM.

Log Ladder
Finishing off the first day of the 2023 World’s Strongest Man qualifier stage, the Log Ladder requires athletes to lift a series of progressively heavier logs. This event will be tasking the competitors to complete these log lifts for time – fastest (within a 75 second time limit) earning the most points.
Tom Stoltman had an epic finish with the final event of the 2023 World’s Strongest Man day one qualifiers – leading the group with a monstrous 5 logs in 41.50 seconds. Giving him enough points to lead his group overall in the first day. Other athletes to earn first in this event were Thomas Evans, Mitchell Hooper, Brian Shaw, and Trey Mitchell.
