Evelyn Foulkner decided to take on a new challenge at 72 years old and was extremely successful!
Fitness is one avenue where age is truly just a number. Last weekend, 72-year-old Evelyn Foulkner proved this by taking home two medals in her first-ever bodybuilding competition.
Foulkner, who is a grandmother from the Atlanta area, decided to take on a new challenge and dedicated herself to the gym. She began training to compete in January and tailored her lifestyle, in and out of the gym, to be successful on stage. Foulkner spoke with Fox 5 Atlanta during this process.
“Competing was never on my bucket list but I decided I needed to take it to another level and challenge myself.”
Foulkner has gone to the gym for years now but decided to make the big changes in January. This includes following a high-protein diet plan and following a training plan made by trainer, Cliff Witherspoon.
Foulkner competed in the Bikini division during the Super Natural Body Federation Bodybuilding and Fitness competition at Central Gwinnett High School in Lawrenceville. Foulkner impressed with her physique and won two medals, showing that hard work does pay off.
“You have to want to do it and it has to be something that you love doing, a passion for it.”
Evelyn Foulkner Wins Gold In First Competition
Evelyn Foulkner is next in line of competitors who started their bodybuilding journey later in life. This was her first-ever show and she was victorious in the Bikini division. In 2022, Renee Landers caught the attention of many when she took the stage at 69 years old.
Prior to the birth of her son, Landers would run five or six miles a day. She suffered severe backspin following the birth of her only child and could not run. For 25 years, Landers struggled to do any physical activity because of the pain. That would all change when she went through a lower lumbar fusion surgery in October 2009.
In May 2021, Landers stepped on stage for the first time in a bodybuilding competition. At 69 years old, she was the oldest competitor by 20 years but she did not let this get in the way of her goal of becoming a bodybuilder. She finished sixth in the event and she remembers it as one of the best days of her life.
It is never too late to better yourself and achieve your goals. Evelyn Foulkner admitted that there are some difficulties to it but in the end, it is well worth it.
“It’s difficult getting up in the mornings and going to the gym but if you make a habit of getting up and doing something for at least 30 minutes a day, you’ll find out you’ll get enjoyment out of it and you’ll start feeling better.”
