Alan Ritchson’s Military-Style Training
The exact training routine was not shared, but Alan Ritchson was seen going through intense movements, such as pull-ups, tire pulls, and core work. Ritchson admitted that the training style was as hard as he’s ever been through.
“I am the most tired I’ve ever been. This is a tough one.”
The film War Machine portrays soldiers who are part of the US Army’s Ranger Assessment and Selection Program. This is a training course that screens candidates for the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. There are no names used during this program.
“We have replicated where they take 180 applicants. Instead of giving a name, they’re simply given a number. There’s no individualism. That’s a very important part of the process.”
For Ritchson, his character is known as “81.” Playing this role is something that he does not take lightly and it is a reason he has decided to train as hard as he could. Ritchson also shared that he is doing his own stunts when possible in order to give the viewers the most authentic portrayal he could.
“There’s something about the spirit of 81 that has captured me so much. That character that just inspires us to be the best version of ourselves.”
One behind-the-scenes moment shared was when Ritchson dove into the grand-five rapids in full gear. Ritchson, who admitted to not being much of a swimmer, was then seen secured to a rope and had to film his scene in an intense part of the water. Production for this film has taken place in Victoria, Australia, and New Zealand’s South Island.
