Dr. Thomas O’Connor, aka The Anabolic Doc, expects a reckoning to come for bodybuilding gurus.

As bodybuilding gurus have become more popular over the years due to the web, controversial debates have sprung up. Specifically, how responsible should bodybuilding gurus be for an athlete’s health? It’s not uncommon for gurus to recommend performance enhancing drugs as part of a training & nutrition protocol. But gurus aren’t doctors. Are they liable for their suggestions? In our latest GI Exclusive interview, The Anabolic Doc explains why gurus should be 100% responsible and a reckoning may come soon.

During our GI Exclusive interviews throughout the year, we’ve spoken with various bodybuilding gurus and experts. We’ve asked all of them where they think the responsibility lies for a guru who recommends steroids or other PEDs. Are they to blame for dangerous health side effects from these drugs? The answers vary wildly depending on who you ask.

That’s why we decided to ask Dr. Thomas O’Connor, aka The Anabolic Doc what his expert take is on the whole situation. Dr. O’Connor is careful with his words at first. This is more than a medical question – it’s a heated political question. But as an expert, he makes his statement clear. He believes that gurus should 100% be responsible for the athletes they train. On top of that, Dr. O’Connor states that most if not all of these bodybuilding gurus are “snake oil salesman.” Their personal experiments with drugs does not equal real medical knowledge.

Furthermore, when steroids became a controlled substance under US law. It also makes it illegal for a non medical professionals to recommend or provide steroids. Keep in mind, these substances are much more dangerous than your standard bodybuilding supplements like protein powder and creatine. The Anabolic Doc doesn’t name names, but he claims he has had clients who’s family have tried to take legal action. In his mind, all it will take is one well connected individual to die due to a bodybuilding guru before a hammer comes down on the entire industry.

When asked about the personal experience gurus have in using steroids and other PEDs, the Anabolic Doc didn’t hold anything back:

“They don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground. I usually don’t give simple responses. How about that one for simple? They don’t know what they’re doing. It’s a shell game. It’s called snake oil on steroids and their day is going to come… there’s no possible way to give medical advice when you’re not a physician.”
