Dave Bautista Set For New Physique Transformation For ‘God Of War’ After 75-Pound Weight Loss

Dave Bautista Set For New Physique Transformation: Could We See ‘The Animal’ Again?

Dave Bautista spent the last several years transforming his body away from the massive physique that made him a star in WWE. Now, at 57 years old, the former professional wrestler could be preparing to take his physique in the opposite direction.

Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of God of War, replacing Ryan Hurst after the actor suffered a torn biceps on set.

The casting presents an interesting physical challenge for Bautista. According to Men’s Health UK, Bautista previously dropped roughly 75 pounds, slimming down from around 315 pounds to approximately 240 pounds as he deliberately moved away from the enormous muscular frame he carried during his wrestling career.

Now, Bautista is preparing to portray one of the most famously muscular characters in video game history.

Dave Bautista Dropped 75 Pounds After Reaching 315 Pounds

Bautista’s weight loss became a major topic of conversation in 2024 after fans noticed how dramatically different the six-time WWE world champion looked.

The actor explained that his weight had climbed to around 315 pounds after he deliberately gained size for M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. Eventually, Bautista felt he had taken the weight gain too far.

“I think I overdid it. I just got really big… I put on an uncomfortable amount of weight.”

He subsequently began trimming down and eventually reached approximately 240 pounds. Bautista acknowledged that getting lighter meant giving up some of the muscle mass he had carried for decades.

“I’ve sacrificed a lot of muscle, but I’m okay with it because I just feel more comfortable.”

His approach to fitness changed along with his physique. Instead of prioritizing maximum muscle mass, Bautista placed greater emphasis on cardiovascular conditioning and jiu-jitsu while taking a more controlled approach to his diet.

By late 2024, Bautista said he was leaner than he had been since he was 19 years old.

“Now that I’m older, fu**ing old, this has done a lot for me,” Bautista said of his new training approach. “I feel better now than I have in years because my training is so good. My cardio is awesome.”

Will Dave Bautista Bulk Up To Play Kratos?

That now becomes the big question surrounding Bautista’s latest role.

Kratos has traditionally been depicted with an exceptionally muscular physique throughout the God of War franchise. Hurst reportedly spent months adding significant size in preparation for the role before his injury forced production to change course.

Bautista, meanwhile, has spent years doing almost exactly the opposite.

The former WWE superstar has openly discussed no longer wanting to maintain the enormous physique that defined much of his professional wrestling career and some of his earlier Hollywood roles. At 57, there is little reason to expect Bautista to return all the way to the 315-pound bodyweight he previously described as uncomfortable.

But he certainly has the foundation to add muscle.

Before becoming a major Hollywood star through Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune and other films, Bautista rose to prominence as Batista in WWE. During his wrestling career, the six-time world champion was known for possessing one of the most imposing physiques on the roster.

Even after losing approximately 75 pounds and sacrificing considerable muscle, Bautista is hardly starting from scratch.

His preparation for God of War could therefore provide bodybuilding and wrestling fans with another fascinating Bautista transformation. After spending the last several years intentionally getting smaller, playing Kratos may finally give the former WWE champion a reason to start packing some size back onto his frame.
