Branch Warren discussed training methods in today’s era of bodybuilding.
Bodybuilding great Branch Warren has shared many opinions on today’s era of bodybuilding. During a recent conversation with IFBB AMA, Warren discussed some of today’s training methods, including the absence of squats, and how it impacts the overall look of physiques.
Warren believes that his grainy look on stage came from training to failure with high intensity and heavy weight. Now, he does not see many training like that anymore.
“I think it’s the training. I think that super heavy weight, high intensity, training to failure, I think years and years of that, I built that density and graininess that I have. People that don’t train like that, they don’t look like that.”
Warren has remained extremely active in retirement. Despite not stepping on a competitive stage, Warren continued to train at a high level. During his career, Warren was able to win two Arnold Classic titles. He has plenty of experience on the Olympia stage and competed at shows for over a decade spanning across the 1990s. Warren was unable to capture the elusive Sandow Trophy but is considered one of the best of all-time without an Olympia win.

Branch Warren Calls Out Bodybuilders Who Do Not Squat
During his career, Branch Warren was able to build an impressive physique using heavy weight on many exercises. This includes squats. He spoke on the idea that competitors do not squat like they used to.
“How many guys nowadays squat? They don’t. A high-intensity squat will make your whole body grow. How many guys squat till their f*cking nose bleeds? Maybe James Hollingshead. He still trains hard. But I don’t see that anymore and the physiques look different.”
There are many reasons as to why you should work to improve your squat. Gaines are far better with better form. Who wouldn’t want their gains to be more glorious? For example, if you are half-repping your squats, or any exercise for that matter, you are not getting the full muscular engagement as opposed to when you complete a full range of motion. Squatting with the best possible form, leads to the best possible gains for the lifter.
Squatting was a movement that Branch Warren used a lot during his career. It was part of the method to build the grainy look that he achieved on stage. Now, the new era has new training methods and this leads to new looks.
“It’s a different era, I get it. Everybody trains different. The supplement different, all that stuff. The training is different so the physiques look different.”
