A new investigation reveals how young men are turning to testosterone injections to build muscle and boost masculinity, despite serious health risks.
Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has become increasingly popular in the fitness and bodybuilding community, but a dangerous new trend is taking things a step further. Young men are injecting testosterone without prescriptions or medical supervision in hopes of building muscle, increasing strength, and achieving a more masculine physique.
A new investigation by the New York Post examined the growing phenomenon known as “testmaxxing,” interviewing men who have turned to synthetic testosterone despite having no diagnosed hormone deficiency.
While TRT can be beneficial for men with clinically low testosterone, medical experts warn that using the hormone unnecessarily can have serious consequences.
Young Men Turn to Testosterone for Muscle Growth
The Post interviewed two men in their 30s who began injecting testosterone to accelerate their physical transformations.
One man, identified as Aiden, struggled with his naturally skinny physique despite following a high-protein diet and working with a personal trainer. When his progress stalled, he began using testosterone obtained without a prescription.
“I haven’t spoken to a doctor because I didn’t want to be talked out of it, as I had my mind set on it.”
After three hormone cycles over two years, Aiden reported increased strength, energy, motivation, and faster recovery.
Another man, Henry, began injecting testosterone after witnessing a friend’s dramatic gym transformation. Despite blood testing that did not identify a testosterone deficiency, he purchased testosterone through an unofficial supplier.
Three months later, Henry reported significant strength gains and plans to continue until he achieves his desired physique.

Doctors Warn of Serious TRT Health Risks
Although testosterone plays an essential role in muscle development, strength, libido, and recovery, artificially increasing levels without medical supervision carries significant risks.
According to medical experts interviewed by the Post, potential consequences include:
- Infertility: External testosterone suppresses natural testosterone production and can dramatically reduce sperm production.
- Hormonal suppression: Natural testosterone production may take months or years to recover after stopping injections.
- Blood clots and stroke: Elevated red blood cell counts, known as polycythemia, can increase cardiovascular risks.
- Heart complications: Testosterone misuse may contribute to cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks.
- Mood changes: Irritability, depression, and other psychological symptoms can develop.
- Acne and skin problems: Increased androgen levels can trigger significant breakouts.
- Withdrawal symptoms: Coming off testosterone can cause fatigue, low libido, and other symptoms that make discontinuation difficult.
Unregulated products also introduce concerns about contamination, incorrect dosing, and unsafe injection practices.
Dr. Joseph Alukal, a Columbia University urologist, warned that men with normal testosterone levels expose themselves to unnecessary health risks by taking additional hormones.
Is Testmaxxing Worth the Risk?
The trend reflects growing pressure on young men to develop muscular physiques, particularly through social media and online fitness communities.
However, TRT is a medical treatment for diagnosed testosterone deficiency, not simply a shortcut to better bodybuilding results.
For men experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, physicians recommend proper evaluation and blood testing before considering treatment.
The pursuit of additional muscle may be appealing, but experts warn that manipulating hormones without medical supervision can carry consequences long after the gains disappear.
