The World’s Strongest Man and “Those About to Die” star dominate chest
Eddie Hall, known for his monumental achievement as the 2017 World’s Strongest Man, famously became the first person to deadlift an astounding 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds). Despite stepping away from competitive strongman events, Hall continues to inspire with his training and impressive feats of strength.
Hall has taken on various challenges post-competition, including participating in an indie wrestling show, engaging in a professional boxing bout, and even devouring the entire McDonald’s menu in one sitting. On July 21, 2024, Hall teamed up with actor, bodybuilder, and star of Peacock’s “Those About to Die,” Martyn Ford, for an intense chest training session.
Eddie Hall & Martyn Ford’s Chest Workout
Ford guided Hall through a rigorous chest workout, featuring the following exercises:
- Machine Chest Flyes
- Machine Incline Chest Presses
- Cable Chest Flyes
- Machine Triceps Dips
- Push-Ups
Ford emphasized his training approach, which prioritizes time under tension over lifting heavy weights.
Warm-Up: Seated Machine Chest Flyes
The duo began their workout with machine chest flyes, ensuring a thorough warm-up to get the blood pumping enhance exercise performance. They focused on stretching and squeezing their pectoral muscles with controlled eccentrics and isometric holds. Ford instructed a regimen of a two-second eccentric, a two-second hold, and a four-second concentric, maintaining constant tension to prepare their muscles for the main sets.
Machine Incline Chest Presses & Cable Chest Flyes
Hall progressively increased the weights, emphasizing eccentric movements, which contrasts with the typical strongman focus on lifting heavy weights. Their session ended with drop sets and 20-second rest pauses to failure. Research published in Frontiers in Physiology suggests that training to failure can significantly boost muscle growth and strength.
Machine Triceps Dips & Push-Ups
Ford guided Hall to lean slightly forward and protrude his chest during triceps dips to better engage the pectoral muscles. They performed several repetitions before concluding their workout with push-ups.
Wrapping Up
Hall praised the 90-minute session, highlighting the exceptional pump he achieved. For those interested in seeing Ford in action, all 10 episodes of “Those About to Die” are available on Peacock as of July 18, 2024, and on Amazon Prime Video the following day, where Ford stars as the gladiator Flamma.
