High School Principal Crushes 585-Pound Deadlift: “Pick This Up, You Get An ‘A'”

Deadlift

An old video of a principal crushing a deadlift has the fitness world amazed.

The internet is forever and sometimes, videos resurface that gain attention years later. On Tuesday, a video came to light once again of a high school principal crushing a 585-pound deadlift in the school’s gym wearing his work clothes. The fitness world has plenty to say about the incredible video.

Alexander Mercieca is a principal at Grissom High School in Huntsville, Alabama. In 2022, a video showed Mercieca hitting a massive deadlift in front of his students in the gym. The video recently made a comeback when it was shared to the “Gym Humour” Instagram page.

“Teaching the students a thing about lifting”

Deadlifts are a timeless exercise that weightlifters use to build strength in many ways. No matter the size or age of a lifter, deadlifts can be accomplished at a heavy weight. Of course, there are many powerlifters who continue to set new PRs. This includes Rudy Kadlub, who commits to setting a new raw PR on each birthday. This year, it was 524 pounds at 74 years old.

Mercieca is not just a principal. He is a certified CrossFit trainer that practices fitness on a daily basis. By the looks of the video, it looks like he had plenty left in the tank.

Fitness World Reacts To Resurfaced Video

The video of the insane deadlift might be over a year old but the fitness world was happy to see it again and reacted in the comment area.

“If you can pick this up, you get an ‘A'”

“The dad strength is unreal”

“He can absolutely do more”

Of course, like any video on social media, there are some that comment negatively. Mercieca drops the weight at the end of the video and one commenter believes that he should have placed it down.

“Maybe he could team them to set the bar back down instead of dropping it”

“Impressive but can he teach”

According to his Instagram page, Mercieca can do much more than the resurfaced video. In a recent post, he showed off repping 550 pounds three times. The video remains impressive given the attire during the lift and context.
