Michael Daboul Shocks Bodybuilding World, Pulls Out of 2026 Mr. Olympia
Michael Daboul will not compete at the 2026 Mr. Olympia despite earning enough points to qualify for bodybuilding’s biggest event.
Daboul announced his decision on social media, revealing that he has chosen to shut down his 2026 competitive season and focus on making improvements before returning next year.
“Even though I am qualified through points I’ve decided to take off the rest of year and take some time to improve grow and come back better than ever.”
The decision comes after an eventful final stretch of the season for the Classic Physique standout. Daboul won the 2026 Huanji Harbin China Pro on Aug. 16 before finishing third at the Austrian Oak Pro less than a week later. His reaction to that third-place finish became one of the biggest stories coming out of the competition.
Daboul Chooses To Sit Out 2026 Olympia
Despite earning his place in the Olympia field, Daboul explained that stepping away was an extremely difficult decision.
“The Olympia is a dream, standing on that stage is something I’ve dreamed about for years and choosing not to compete this year was extremely difficult for me.”
Daboul said his recent comeback came after being away from the stage for 10 months. While he was proud of the physique he presented, he believes there is still significant room for improvement.
“I’m proud of the package I brought, but I also know there is still a lot of work to be done…Sometimes taking a step back is exactly what you need to take two steps forward.”
According to the IFBB Pro League’s current Olympia qualification standings, Daboul has accumulated 16 points in Classic Physique.
Rather than immediately turning his attention toward another Olympia prep, Daboul plans to use the extended offseason to address weaknesses and return with what he described as “a better physique, a better package and a stronger mindset.”
“I’ll see you on that 2027 Olympia stage,” he concluded.
Decision Comes After Austrian Oak Judging Controversy
Daboul’s announcement is particularly noteworthy considering what unfolded at the Austrian Oak Pro on Aug. 22.
Daboul entered the competition just six days after winning the Huanji Harbin China Pro. However, he was awarded third place in Vienna behind winner Zhivko Petkov and runner-up Florian Hartlage, according to the official scorecards.
The result clearly frustrated Daboul.
As Generation Iron previously reported, Daboul protested the decision while still onstage and appeared ready to leave before returning for the customary photographs. He later apologized for his actions, admitting that he had allowed his emotions to get the better of him.
“I let my emotions take control of me and that is not how I want to represent myself as a professional athlete,” Daboul said in his apology.
At the time, Daboul described the Austrian Oak as his final opportunity to secure an Olympia berth following a difficult year. However, the points he accumulated throughout the season ultimately proved enough to put him in qualification position.
Now, rather than pushing forward toward the Olympia, Daboul has made the opposite decision.
The 2025 Olympia eighth-place finisher will take an extended offseason and attempt to return to the sport’s biggest stage in 2027 with a significantly improved package.
