Mike Sommerfeld has issued a statement on social media after missing weight at 2026 Arnold Classic

The 2026 Arnold Classic weekend delivered major moments for bodybuilding fans, but one unexpected development came before the Classic Physique competitors even stepped on stage. Classic Physique pro bodybuilder Mike Sommerfeld was unable to make the required weight limit for the division and therefore would not compete at the event. Mike Sommerfeld has now released a public statement taking full responsibility for the situation and outlining his next move.

The German bodybuilder had been considered one of the notable names to watch in the Classic Physique lineup. However, as the final weigh-in approached, it became clear that Sommerfeld’s weight had not dropped enough to qualify within the division’s limits.

Rather than make excuses, Sommerfeld addressed the issue directly and with accountability in a Instagram post:

“Heading into the show, the weight didn’t come down enough to meet the Classic Physique limit,” Sommerfeld wrote in a statement shared with fans. “I take full responsibility for that.”

Mike Sommerfeld Reflects On Missing Weight

Classic Physique is one of the most structured divisions in the IFBB Pro League when it comes to weight requirements. Competitors must weigh in according to a height-based cap. This system is designed to maintain the aesthetic balance and classic proportions that define the category. Missing that limit, even by a small margin, prevents an athlete from stepping on stage.

For Mike Sommerfeld, that meant stepping away from the competition despite months of preparation.

Still, the bodybuilder approached the situation with a level-headed mindset and emphasized the importance of learning from setbacks.

“Moments like this don’t define you. They humble you,” he explained. “We reset, we adjust, and we move forward.”

In the world of professional bodybuilding, prep can be unpredictable. Athletes push their bodies to extreme levels of conditioning, dialing in diet, water, sodium, and training in the final weeks before competition. Even with careful planning, the body does not always respond exactly as expected.

Sommerfeld acknowledged that reality while also making it clear that the responsibility ultimately falls on him. However, he does not make any mention of the rumor that he tried to come in at a taller height expecting a re-measure.

Focusing on Gratitude Rather Than Dwelling On The Setback

Instead of dwelling on the missed opportunity, he shifted his focus toward gratitude and respect for the organization that hosted the event.

“I want to sincerely thank the IFBB Pro League and the organizers for their kindness and professionalism throughout this process,” he wrote.

The Arnold Classic is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious competitions in bodybuilding outside of the Mr. Olympia. Being part of the lineup is a major accomplishment for any athlete. Sommerfeld’s appreciation for the event organizers reflects the professionalism expected within the sport.

He also gave credit to the person who has helped guide his career behind the scenes.

“I also want to thank my coach Neil Hill who has always looked out for my best interests and is an incredible mentor to me.”

Neil Hill is one of the most respected coaches in bodybuilding and has worked with numerous elite athletes across multiple divisions. Known for his Y3T training system and deep experience with contest preparation, Hill has built a reputation for helping competitors reach peak condition on the biggest stages.

Sommerfeld made it clear that his coach’s support remains an important part of his journey, even during moments that do not go as planned.

Despite not competing, the bodybuilder also took a moment to show respect for the athletes who did step on stage.

“Wishing all the athletes on stage today the best of luck and great moments to remember.”

That sportsmanship reflects the competitive but respectful culture within the bodybuilding community. Each athlete understands the effort and discipline required to reach the Arnold Classic stage.

Mike Sommerfeld’s Next Steps

With the 2026 Arnold Classic now behind him, Sommerfeld has already set his sights on the next opportunity. According to his statement, he plans to move forward quickly and compete later this month.

“The focus now shifts forward. See you at the Arnold Classic UK.”

The Arnold Classic UK is scheduled for March 27 to March 29 and will give Sommerfeld another chance to showcase his physique on a major stage. The event has grown into one of the key international stops on the IFBB Pro League calendar and regularly features top athletes from around the world.

For Sommerfeld, the quick turnaround could serve as the perfect reset. Instead of extending his prep for months, he can make adjustments and bring a refined version of his physique to the UK stage.

In bodybuilding, setbacks are part of the process. Even elite competitors occasionally face unexpected challenges during contest prep. What often matters most is how they respond.

Sommerfeld’s response has been direct and accountable. He accepted responsibility, thanked those who supported him, and quickly shifted his focus to the next competition.

Fans will now look toward the Arnold Classic UK to see how the Classic Physique standout rebounds. If his statement is any indication, Sommerfeld is already focused on the next opportunity to step on stage and prove that one missed weigh-in does not define his journey.
