Phillip Herndon set a new record after dropping down one division at the 2025 WPPL Pro Invitational.
Phillip Herndon is a powerlifting veteran who has accomplished great things. He has excelled on the squat rack over the course of his career and continues to take his game to the next level. Herndon recently competed at the 2025 WPPL Pro Invitational and was able to set a new raw squat world record.
Herndon stepped up to the rack with 420kg (925.9lb) loaded on the bar. He was able to lock it out at the top and set a new record in the 125kg weight class.
The previous record was held by Reece Fullwood. He was able to complete a lift of 412.5kg (909.4lb) at the 2023 GPC-GB Welsh Championships.
Herndon left no doubt with his final attempt in squats. He was only allowed to use a lifting belt, wrist wraps, and knee sleeves to compete in the raw division. Once the weight was on his back, Herndon lowered and was able to push back up with what look like ease. It almost seemed as though Herndon had some left in the tank but did plenty to set a new record.
Phillip Herndon set a new competition PR of 1,025kg (2,259.7lb) total during this show. It was headlined by his performance in squats but was strong in all three lifts. He logged 240kg (529.1lb) on bench press and deadlifted 365kg (804.6lb). Herndon’s performance continued to show that he is an elite powerlifter in the world. After years of competing at a high level, he seems to be getting better and better.
Why Improving Squats is Important
As to why you should be mindful of improving your squat, there are a few reasons, let’s dive on!
For one, gains are far better with better form. Who wouldn’t want their gains to be more glorious? For example, if you are half-repping your squats, or any exercise for that matter, you are not getting the full muscular engagement as opposed to when you complete a full range of motion. Squatting with the best possible form, leads to the best possible gains for the lifter!
Another reason to be mindful of how you are squatting is injury. Performing squats incorrectly could result in things like back issues, knee issues, and other unwanted issues that could put you out of commission. It is every lifter’s worst nightmare to be injured to the point where they cannot hit the gym at maximum strength. Make sure to do everything you can to avoid something like that.
