Phillip Herndon Becomes Lightest Person to Squat 1,000-Lbs

Phillip Herndon has etched his name into the record books with a 1,000 lb squat.

Powerlifter, Phillip Herndon became the lightest person to squat a whopping 1,000 lbs in wraps. Herndon accomplished the feat at a recent powerlifting meet, the 2023 IPA Strength Spectacular. Etching his name into strength sports history, Herndon became one of the few human beings able to put 1,000 lbs on their back and heft the weight using knee wraps.

Like most other sporting events, powerlifting is split into multiple different divisions, based on your gender as well as your weight class. For instance, a 350-lb powerlifter is unlikely to compete in the same division as a 150-lb athlete. This allows competition to remain fair equal and balanced. Lighter athletes, usually end up, lifting a lower weight than their larger counterparts. But there are times when an athlete from a lighter division is able to push past their perceived limits and heft far more weight than anticipated.

Enter Phillip Herndon.

Weighing in at 263.3 lbs, Phillip Herndon likely wasn’t expected to break into the 1000-lb squat club. However, at a recent meet in Pennsylvania at the 2023 IPA Strength Spectacular, Herndon did exactly that. Assisted with knee wraps, a lifting belt, and wrist wraps, Herndon became the lightest athlete to squat half a ton of weight on his back.

Having gone through a three-week camp to compete at the show in the 275-lb weight class, Philip Herndon had never been more prepared. Herndon also claimed the honor of having the second-heaviest lift in the division’s history. But when you put in quality time in the training room, anything is possible.
