The reason Ronnie Coleman became a cop: it required no experience.

The legend of Ronnie Coleman is known by nearly all bodybuilding fans at this point. He was a cop who became an Olympia champion bodybuilder. He then shockingly still stayed as a cop during his competitive years. This is just one example of his incredible work ethic. But what some might not know, is that before becoming a cop he wanted to be an accountant. How did he end up down the path of the law? In our latest GI Exclusive Vault interview, Ronnie Coleman explains in detail how he went from accountant dreams to becoming a police officer.

There’s no denying that Ronnie Coleman is one of the most legendary bodybuilders in the history of the sport. It’s the reason we decided to make a feature film documentary about his life story – Ronnie Coleman: The King. And while that film went into incredible detail about his past and present, we just couldn’t fit everything into one movie.

That’s why we’re pulling extended interview segments from the cutting room floor of Ronnie Coleman: The King. These GI Vault segments help paint an even more detailed picture of the legend known as The King. In this recently unearthed interview clip, Ronnie Coleman goes into detail about how he became a cop. Surprisingly, it wasn’t his first choice and the reason he ended up going down that path was more random circumstance than anything else.

After moving to Texas, Ronnie Coleman wanted to get a job in accounting. It was what he was good at and seemed like a secure career path. He only had one problem, every job he applied to required previous experience. Ronnie had no accounting experience at that point and had trouble landing a job.

But with rent and new car payments coming up, he needed to find something fast. He found a job at Domino’s pizza to make ends meet. During this entire time, he was still looking and applying to accounting jobs. No luck.

Suddenly, in the newspaper he saw an ad for joining the police force. One key phrase caught his attention – no experience necessary. After months of being told he didn’t have enough experience, this message seemed like the obvious choice for Ronnie. Being a cop would be a truly stable career path (however potentially dangerous). It was certainly better than working at Domino’s.

We all know what happened next. Ronnie Coleman became a cop, became dedicated to bodybuilding, and eventually became a 8x Mr. Olympia champion. Ronnie Coleman’s past as a police officer has always been one part of the mythos behind the legend. It’s funny to think that in an alternate reality, he would have been an accountant instead.

Perhaps you can call it fate. But ultimately his path towards being a cop wasn’t calculated at all. It was random. It was luck. And it changed everything.
