Don Saladino has worked with many celebrities and talked Ryan Reynolds’ training plan.
Celebrity trainer Don Saladino has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and Ryan Reynolds has been apart of that list for years now. The duo has worked together since the early days of Deadpool and with a new movie coming out this summer, they hit the gym to prepare during filming.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in July and Reynolds will get the chance to continue his role in the series. Following the writers and actors strike last year, filming was delayed and this meant that Reynolds’ training was extended as he had to remain in the best shape possible.
“It was a very stressful time for everyone. You just kind of had to fight for yourselg and you just had to deal with it.”
The Deadpool series began in 2016 with Reynolds making his debut as the main character in an entertaining movie with graphic and dirty humor. Saladino spoke with Men’s Health about training Reynolds for this movie and how they used aspects that worked well in the past.
“Every movie, we implemented new things and we had a little bit of a different mindset. What really became interesting with this project is that the word ‘resiliency’ was something I feel like he embraced a lot more. He’s now 47, and he’s definitely thinking differently than he was when I met him, when he was 32 or 33.”

Ryan Reynolds Training Plan
Warmup
- 90/90 Breathing – 3 minutes
- Foam Rolling – 3 minutes
- Cat Cow – 30 seconds
- Thoracic Rotation – 10 reps per side
- Hip Circles – 10 reps per side
Workout
After warming up, Saladino led Ryan Reynolds through his workout, which is performed in one big circuit.
- Kettlebell Swings – 5 sets of 5 reps
- Front Squat – 5 sets of 5 reps
- Bench Press – 5 sets of 5 reps
- Strict Pullup – 5 sets of 5 reps
- Loaded Carry – 5 rounds of 25 yards
Ryan Reynolds’ training plan consists of warmups to make sure he avoids injury and prepares himself for an intense set. He focuses on tempo and form during interval work. That can be seen with the set that Saladino puts him through.
The two made sure to get workouts in whenever possible, including many sessions at 4:30am.
“It’s not like everyone thinks that it’s all cushy. If he wakes up with a terrible sore throat, he’s puking, whatever, it’s not like ‘Oh, I can’t come in today. What are you f*cking kidding me? There’s hundreds of people on set right now.”
Don Saladino and Ryan Reynolds have put in an incredible amount of work and it can come to fruition in July once the film is released.
