Samson Dauda’s CNN Interview Brings Bodybuilding to a Mainstream Global Audience

Samson Dauda Says Winning Mr. Olympia Inspired a Nation In New CNN Interview

With just weeks remaining before the 2026 Mr. Olympia, former champion Samson Dauda is taking bodybuilding to a much bigger stage. In a new exclusive interview with CNN Africa’s African Voices Playmakers, Dauda reflected on becoming the first Nigerian to win the Sandow trophy, what that achievement meant to his home country, and why representing Nigeria has become one of the biggest motivations of his career.

For bodybuilding, appearances like this are significant. Mainstream international outlets such as CNN rarely devote long-form features to professional bodybuilding, giving the sport exposure to audiences well beyond its traditional fanbase. As bodybuilding continues to grow globally, stories highlighting athletes’ personal journeys rather than just their physiques can help introduce new fans to the sport.

Generation Iron readers may also recognize Dauda as the featured star of the documentary Dream Big, which chronicled his rise from aspiring competitor to Mr. Olympia. The timing of CNN’s profile only adds another chapter to one of bodybuilding’s most compelling modern success stories.

Samson Dauda Reflects On Making Nigerian History

Throughout the interview, Dauda spoke emotionally about what it meant to become the first Nigerian athlete to capture bodybuilding’s biggest prize.

“There’s only ever been one person from Nigeria that’s ever won it. So to be able to stand there and say, ‘Okay, that is something that I’ve achieved,’ it’s an honor.”

Dauda explained that every bodybuilder dreams of standing on the Olympia stage, making the accomplishment even more meaningful.

“It’s a title that every person that’s ever dreamt to be a bodybuilder, everybody who’s ever imagined taking the sport to the highest level, it’s their dream to stand on the Olympia stage.”

He admitted he wasn’t prepared for the worldwide response following his victory.

“The amount of messages and feedback I got from people all around the world, and Nigerians are everywhere, so proud about this achievement. It was overwhelming.”

The Story Behind “The Nigerian Lion”

Dauda also shared how his now-famous nickname came to life years before he became Mr. Olympia.

According to Dauda, a fellow bodybuilder messaged him in 2019 suggesting the nickname “The Nigerian Lion.” At first he laughed, but quickly realized it perfectly represented both his personality and his ambitions.

As his career progressed, the nickname became synonymous with one of bodybuilding’s most dominant competitors.

“It sort of grew with my career,” Dauda explained, saying he eventually found himself embodying everything the nickname represented.

Inspiring The Next Generation

Perhaps the most powerful moment of the interview came when Dauda discussed the importance of representation.

He believes seeing someone from your own country reach the pinnacle of a sport can inspire an entirely new generation to believe those same dreams are possible.

“If I had the time when I was coming up and I saw another Nigerian that was able to achieve it, I know full well I would’ve been emulating him. I’d be watching him and go, ‘Okay, well, if he can do it, hell, I know I can.’”

It’s a message that extends far beyond bodybuilding and helps explain why Dauda’s Olympia victory resonated with so many people across Nigeria and throughout Africa.

Why Interviews Like This Matter For Bodybuilding

While bodybuilding has exploded across social media over the past decade, mainstream television coverage remains relatively rare outside of major competitions.

That’s why Dauda’s appearance on CNN is notable. It presents bodybuilding through the lens of perseverance, national pride, and personal achievement instead of simply showcasing physiques.

With the 2026 Mr. Olympia approaching, the interview also gives one of the sport’s biggest stars another opportunity to reach millions of viewers who may have never followed professional bodybuilding before.

For Generation Iron, it’s another reminder that Dauda’s impact extends beyond contest placings. Whether through Dream Big, his Olympia victory, or now a global CNN feature, “The Nigerian Lion” continues helping bodybuilding reach audiences far outside the gym.
