WWE Superstar Gunther Opens up About the Reasons Behind his Remarkable Body Transformation
There may not be a more dramatic transformation in pro wrestling over the last several years than Gunther.
Longtime wrestling fans remember the Austrian powerhouse during his “Big Daddy Walter” era: a bruising heavyweight with a throwback look and devastating chops. But today, WWE fans know him as “The Ring General,” a leaner, sharper, sculpted main-event star who has become one of the most dominant champions of the modern era. The man who famously retired John Cena.
Now, Gunther is finally opening up in detail about why he decided to completely reinvent his body before arriving on WWE’s main roster.
Gunther Says The Transformation Was His Decision
Speaking during an interview with Italian YouTuber Enry Lazzy, Gunther explained that he never hated his old look. In fact, he believed the larger, rugged version of himself fit perfectly within the old-school wrestling world he came from.
But once WWE’s audience became more mainstream, especially during the company’s expansion onto larger global platforms, he realized things had changed.
Gunther explained that hardcore wrestling fans understood his original presentation, but mainstream audiences might simply see someone who “didn’t look like a champion.” He added that he wanted to remain authentic to himself while evolving into a more polished version fit for national television.
“In my case, I never felt uncomfortable before or anything. My wrestling idols were butcher-looking heavyweights from America that went to Japan and beat up all of the Japanese babyfaces. They were all, to call it, barrel-chested with a little bit of gut. But obviously, WWE, we’ve expanded so much and now with Netflix, there’s such a different viewership on it and so much wider. So I thought [transforming his body] was gonna be necessary.”
That mindset ultimately sparked one of the most talked-about physical transformations in WWE.
The Old WWE Standard: Bigger, Leaner, More Muscular
For decades, WWE under Vince McMahon famously prioritized monster physiques. The company became synonymous with massive “body guys,” towering stars with comic-book proportions and visibly sculpted physiques. People who worked with McMahon talk about his “airport test” – gauging whether a wrestler has a “larger-than-life” appearance, that makes average people turn their heads and recognize them as a star when walking through an airport.
While Gunther always possessed incredible in-ring credibility, his original Walter look leaned more toward classic Japanese heavyweight bruisers and gritty European strong-style wrestlers than the polished WWE superstar aesthetic.
Gunther himself admitted that while the “butcher from the next-door shop” vibe worked on the independent wrestling scene, he understood that WWE television required a different presentation.
That realization led to a complete overhaul of his training, nutrition, and conditioning.
How Gunther Dropped More Than 60 Pounds
Reports over the last several years have documented Gunther losing roughly 65 pounds during his transition into WWE’s top-tier spotlight.
According to Gunther, the process accelerated after moving to the United States and preparing for weekly national television appearances. He credited stricter dieting and a more disciplined approach to food as major turning points.
In past interviews, Gunther admitted he always loved food and cooking, but eventually realized he needed to “bring the best version” of himself once he knew millions of viewers would be watching every week.
The transformation didn’t change his wrestling philosophy though. Gunther still competes with the same brutal, hard-hitting style that made him famous worldwide. His knife-edge chops remain among the most feared strikes in wrestling. And his “Ring General” persona continues to be rooted in discipline, realism, and old-school intensity.
From Walter to One of WWE’s Most Dominant Modern Stars
The body transformation ultimately coincided with the greatest run of Gunther’s career.
After becoming a dominant force in NXT UK with a historic 870-day championship reign, Gunther exploded into WWE’s main roster scene and shattered records as Intercontinental Champion.
Today, he stands as one of WWE’s defining stars of this generation, evolving from indie wrestling cult icon into a legitimate mainstream attraction.
And perhaps fittingly, the once-overlooked “Big Daddy Walter” is now remembered as the foundation that built one of wrestling’s most intimidating modern champions: The Ring General.
