Ronald Montenegro passed away after a tragic bench press accident left the barbell crashing onto his chest
A tragic accident in Brazil claimed the life of Ronald Montenegro, a 55 year old dad of two and a familiar face in his local gym. According to a report by the Daily Mail, The museum president and amateur weightlifter died after a heavy barbell slipped from his hands during a bench press session in Olinda, a historic town on Brazil’s northeast coast near Recife.
The shocking incident was caught on video, and the footage has spread across social media, sparking discussions about gym safety, proper supervision, and the risks tied to heavy lifting without a spotter.
Montenegro had been training at his regular gym, RW Academia, when the bar fell directly onto his chest. He managed to free himself from the weight as other gym goers ran to help. Despite getting up on his own, he collapsed moments later and never recovered.
Gym staff acted immediately and emergency services rushed him to the hospital, but doctors could not save him. Police investigated the situation but have already ruled the incident an accident.
A Respected Leader and Devoted Father
Montenegro was more than a fitness enthusiast. He was the president of the Palacio dos Bonecos Gigantes museum, a cultural institution dedicated to the giant puppets that play a central role in Olinda’s famous carnival. These towering figures, often 15 feet tall and weighing up to 45 kilos, are an iconic symbol of local tradition.
The museum released a heartfelt statement mourning the loss of its leader. They described Montenegro as a creator, a visionary, and a passionate defender of popular culture who played an essential role in keeping the puppet tradition alive. According to the statement, his dedication shaped generations and left a legacy that will continue to influence the Olinda carnival.
The museum also announced that it will suspend its activities until December 5 out of respect for Montenegro’s memory and for the mourning period of his family and team. They encouraged the public to honor his work and reflect on the cultural impact he leaves behind.
“Today we have lost not only a leader, but a friend, a creator, a passionate defender of popular culture, and one of the people most responsible for keeping alive the tradition of giant puppets that enchant Olinda and the world. His dedication, vision, and love for carnival have marked generations and will live on in every detail of our work.
Out of respect for his memory and the mourning of his entire family and team, we inform you that the activities of the Palacio dos Bonecos will be suspended, returning to normal on December 5. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and ask that you join us in prayer and tribute to this great man who left an eternal legacy to the culture and tradition of the Olinda carnival.”
Family Pushes for Better Gym Safety
While the fitness community grieves, Montenegro’s family has turned its attention toward gym safety practices. A relative spoke to Brazilian media and pointed to the video of the accident, saying the movement should never be attempted without a trainer present. They stressed that even experienced lifters can lose control of the bar, especially when fatigue sets in.
The relative explained that Montenegro completed earlier sets without issues, warmed up again, then sat down for another attempt. This time he could not complete the lift, and the bar slipped. The family is now urging gyms to reassess safety protocols and ensure that trainers do not leave members unassisted during high risk exercises like the bench press.
Their message echoes a long running discussion in the fitness world. The bench press is one of the most effective chest builders but also one of the most dangerous lifts when performed alone. A failed rep can result in severe injury or death if a lifter does not have a spotter or safety equipment such as adjustable safety arms or power rack pins.

As the community pays tribute to a beloved father, athlete, and cultural leader, the hope is that gyms across Brazil and beyond will take a closer look at their safety standards. Preventing future tragedies starts with awareness and accountability in every training environment.
Montenegro leaves behind a powerful legacy in both fitness and culture. His work, passion, and leadership will continue to shape Olinda’s carnival and inspire the people who knew and admired him.
