Different pre-workout supplements continue to emerge to give gym goers that extra boost needed to get the best out of themselves in the gym. Whether it be a shake or an energy drink, many methods have been shared from those who have tried many different avenues. The popular thought is whether black coffee is enough to do the job necessary before hitting the gym.
“Recent research suggests that gold old caffeine delivers a similar performance boost to an eight-ingredient pre-workout supplement.”
Schwarzenegger shared different research that supports this thought in his newsletter.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks Black Coffee As A Pre-Workout
Schwarzenegger shared a research study where those involved performed 75-85% of their one-rep max on the leg press and bench press. What was found is that there was no major difference in using a pre-workout substance as opposed to caffeine in black coffee.
“Does that mean there’s no benefit to pre-workout? That would be overstating what was examined. The study was designed to test a single set of maximum reps at a heavy weight on one upper and lower body exercise.”
There are supplements that are designed to help in different areas. For example, some focus on reducing fatigue while others bring an extra boost of energy. In the end, Schwarzenegger shares that the difference is not large enough.
“If you’re focused on maximum strength, caffeine could be all you need for a pre-workout boost. If you have other goals — such as muscle gain — some supplements (such as creatine monohydrate) still offer benefits. But it’s a reminder that many supplement ingredients are overhyped, or the products you purchase have good ingredients but an active dose that’s too low to make a difference.”
Jay Cutler has spoken out about his use of black coffee, along with a fat burner, before workouts. During the peak of his bodybuilding career, Cutler shared that he would workout on a fat burner and a cup of black coffee before the pre-workouts were around, supplements weren’t that popular back then. During a YouTube video, Cutler discussed the benefits of this method.
“What I like about it is it’s not full of caffeine. I remember I would take, before pre-workout exited, I actually took some sort of what we call a fat burner but a thermogenic before I trained to kind of amp myself up beside a cup of coffee.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to share different advice in and out of the gym. He has focused on helping others build a better version of themselves and that has continued with his latest tip.
