Calum von Moger Returns After Nearly a Year Offline, Opens Up About Addiction, Family Tragedy, and Finding Purpose Beyond Bodybuilding
Calum von Moger has made his first appearance online in nearly a year, breaking months of silence with an emotional YouTube video explaining why he disappeared and how he has been rebuilding his life after one of the most turbulent chapters in his career.
Once regarded as one of bodybuilding’s brightest stars and nicknamed “Arnold 2.0” because of his uncanny resemblance to Arnold Schwarzenegger, von Moger became a global fitness sensation through his championship physique, viral social media presence, and appearances in film. But after a series of career-altering injuries and personal tragedies, his life took a dramatically different direction.
Now living in Thailand, von Moger says he intentionally stepped away from social media for roughly six months to focus entirely on recovery.
“I really needed to take a break from social media… just a detox.”
Calum von Moger Reflects on the Events That Changed His Life
Von Moger explained that while his devastating quad and biceps injuries years ago derailed his bodybuilding ambitions, they were only the beginning of a much larger struggle.
He admitted it took years to accept that his dream of competing at the highest level of Classic Physique was no longer realistic.
“The aftermath… was just an unfortunate snowball effect of setbacks.”
The emotional toll became even heavier after the death of his younger brother, Edward von Moger, who died by suicide in 2022 after battling bipolar disorder.
Von Moger revealed that losing his brother left him consumed with guilt and grief that “took a huge toll on me mentally.”
He also admitted that during his darkest period he experienced suicidal thoughts before ultimately deciding to seek help and begin rebuilding his life.
Addiction Became His Way of Escaping Reality
Von Moger also spoke candidly about developing addictions to drugs and alcohol while trying to cope with grief and the collapse of the bodybuilding career he had spent years building.
According to von Moger, the addiction gradually took over before he fully realized how serious it had become.
“I was doing it as a means for escape… just to get away from myself.”
He credited friends in Canada with helping him begin the recovery process. After attending his first Narcotics Anonymous meeting, he said he finally understood he needed to make changes for himself.
He later returned to Thailand, continued attending meetings, moved into a new home, and completely shut down his social media presence so he could focus on rebuilding away from the public eye.
A New Chapter Focused on Wellness Instead of Competition
Rather than discussing a competitive bodybuilding comeback, von Moger says his priorities have shifted toward health, consistency, and helping others who may be struggling with similar issues.
He explained that after nearly giving up on life, he wanted to use his platform differently.
“I feel like for myself who was on the brink of giving up… why not give it one more shot where I can not just heal myself, but at least use the platform to help any of you that might be dealing with this stuff.”
Today, von Moger says he is working at Unreal Gym in Bangkok, rebuilding his fitness, creating new content, and focusing on wellness instead of chasing unrealistic expectations.
From “Arnold 2.0” to One of Bodybuilding’s Most Public Falls
Few bodybuilders have experienced a rise and fall quite like Calum von Moger.
A two-time Mr. Universe champion, von Moger became one of the biggest fitness personalities of the late 2010s thanks to his classic physique, massive online following, and his portrayal of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in Bigger. Generation Iron also chronicled his journey in the documentary Calum von Moger: Unbroken, which followed his comeback attempt after devastating injuries threatened to end his bodybuilding career.
Over the years, however, additional injuries, legal troubles, personal losses, and substance abuse pushed him away from the sport and out of the spotlight.
His latest video marks his first substantial public update in nearly a year. While it doesn’t signal a competitive return to bodybuilding, it does show something many longtime fans were hoping to see: Calum von Moger is focused on recovery, stability, and rebuilding his life one day at a time.
