Elizabeth Smart Takes Bodybuilding Journey to National Stage at 2026 NPC North American Championships

Elizabeth Smart competed in both the Open and Masters divisions at one of the NPC’s biggest events.

Elizabeth Smart has taken another significant step in a bodybuilding journey that has become about far more than competition.

Smart, the child-abduction survivor who has become a prominent advocate for victims of sexual violence and exploitation, recently stepped onstage at the 2026 NPC North American Championships in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, continuing her relatively new pursuit of competitive bodybuilding.

Generation Iron has previously covered Smart’s entry into the sport and the deeply personal reasons she was drawn to it. Now, she has progressed to competing on a national-level NPC stage.

Smart entered the Figure division, competing in both the Masters 35+ category and Open Class D at the North American Championships.

Elizabeth Smart Continues Her Bodybuilding Journey

Smart’s involvement in bodybuilding initially attracted attention because of the dramatic physical transformation required to compete. However, she has explained that building her physique has taken on a deeper meaning.

Smart was abducted from her Utah home at 14 years old in 2002 and held captive for nine months before being rescued in 2003. In the years since, she has become an advocate for survivors and founded the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.

Decades later, strength training and bodybuilding have provided Smart with another way of changing her relationship with her body.

She previously explained that preparing for competition allowed her to focus on what her body was capable of rather than viewing it through the lens of what had happened to her.

That perspective has remained central as she has moved deeper into the competitive side of the sport.

Earlier in 2026, Smart competed at the Wasatch Warrior, where she won the Fit Model Novice division. The performance helped set the stage for her appearance at the North American Championships.

Smart Steps Onto A Much Bigger Stage

The NPC North American Championships represented a considerable jump in competition for Smart.

Unlike a local bodybuilding show, the North Americans attracts competitors from across the country chasing IFBB Pro League status. For Smart, simply progressing from her first competitions to a national-level event represents another milestone in a journey that began largely as a personal challenge.

Smart has also been candid about the difficulty of bodybuilding preparation. Contest prep demands months of structured resistance training, nutrition, posing practice and progressively tighter conditioning as show day approaches.

Her latest appearance shows that this has become more than a one-time bucket-list experience.

Smart has continued training, dieting and competing while balancing her advocacy work and family life, and she has repeatedly emphasized the empowerment she has found through developing greater physical strength.

Bodybuilding Has Become Part of Smart’s Story of Reclaiming Her Body

Smart’s participation in bodybuilding naturally attracts attention because of her public history, but she has been careful about how she describes the connection.

The sport cannot erase what happened to her. Instead, Smart has discussed fitness as something that has allowed her to celebrate what her body can accomplish today.

That makes her progression through bodybuilding particularly noteworthy.

When Smart first stepped onstage, the story was about an unexpected new pursuit and the motivation behind it. Her appearance at the 2026 NPC North American Championships provides the next chapter: she kept going.
