‘You’re Not a Bodybuilder, You’re a Drug Addict’: Flex Wheeler Sounds Off on Modern Bodybuilding

Flex Wheeler Blasts PED-First Mentality: ‘You’re Not a Bodybuilder, You’re a Drug Addict’

Bodybuilding legend Flex Wheeler believes the culture surrounding the sport has changed dramatically, and not for the better. Speaking on a recent episode of Jay Cutler’s Cutler Cast, Wheeler argued that too many aspiring competitors are looking for shortcuts, asking about performance-enhancing drugs before they ever learn the fundamentals of training, nutrition, and discipline – saying: “you’re not a bodybuilder, you’re a drug addict.”

While Wheeler acknowledged that PEDs have long existed in bodybuilding, he stressed that they were never viewed as the foundation of success. Instead, he believes many newcomers today are approaching the sport with the wrong priorities, leading to unrealistic expectations and disappointment.

Flex Wheeler Says Too Many New Competitors Are “Drug Addicts,” Not Bodybuilders

During the discussion, Wheeler reflected on how bodybuilding education has evolved over the decades. He recalled attending seminars where athletes wanted to learn everything they could about nutrition, training methods, recovery, and posing. Today, he says, the first questions he often hears revolve around steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

“We went to seminars to learn nutrition, training, and all these things,” Wheeler explained. “Now people come up and the first thing they want to know is, ‘What are you taking?’”

That shift, according to Wheeler, misses the entire point of bodybuilding.

“Dude, you’re not a bodybuilder, you’re a drug addict,”

Wheeler made it clear he wasn’t claiming bodybuilding has ever been drug-free. Instead, he argued that successful physiques have always been built on years of disciplined training, nutrition, recovery, and consistency, with PEDs never serving as a replacement for those fundamentals.

Wheeler Says Bodybuilding’s Accessibility Can Create Unrealistic Expectations

Wheeler also pointed to what makes bodybuilding different from nearly every other major sport. Unlike football, basketball, or baseball, anyone can sign up for a bodybuilding contest without earning a spot on a team or making a roster.

“We’re the only sport where anybody can compete,” Wheeler explained.

While he believes that accessibility is one of bodybuilding’s greatest strengths, Wheeler also thinks it can create unrealistic expectations for first-time competitors. Some athletes expect immediate success simply because they’ve entered a show, only to become discouraged when they don’t place as highly as they hoped.

According to Wheeler, that disappointment often leads competitors to either quit the sport altogether or become bitter about bodybuilding instead of treating the experience as an opportunity to improve.

His advice was simple: focus on mastering the basics before worrying about anything else. Building muscle, refining technique, improving nutrition, and learning from experienced competitors should come long before conversations about performance-enhancing drugs.

A Reminder That There Are No Shortcuts

Few athletes have the credibility to make that point more than Wheeler. Widely regarded as one of the greatest bodybuilders to never win a Mr. Olympia title, the four-time Arnold Classic champion built his reputation through elite genetics, relentless work ethic, and one of the most aesthetically celebrated physiques in bodybuilding history.

His message wasn’t that performance-enhancing drugs don’t exist in bodybuilding. Rather, it was that they’ve become far too central in conversations with aspiring competitors. In Wheeler’s view, bodybuilding should still begin with hard training, disciplined nutrition, and patience, not with questions about what substances someone is using.

For Wheeler, the athletes who last in bodybuilding are the ones who embrace the process first. Everything else comes later.
