Bodybuilding legend Frank Zane shared his secrets to avoid overtraining.

Frank Zane is one of the all-time great bodybuilders from the Golden Era. At 82 years old, Zane remains active in the gym while also sharing his wisdom with the next generation. Recently, Zane shared a post on Instagram explaining how he used to avoid overtraining.

“The secret of making gains in bodybuilding is to do just enough training to get results and no more.”

Zane graduated from Wilkes University in 1964. He earned his nickname “The Chemist” for his college degree and his use of amino acids and other bodybuilding supplements, which was highly unusual for the time. Zane made his pro debut in 1961 at the Mr. Pennsylvania contest and went on to win the Olympia title three times, from 1977 to 1979. He also won IFBB Mr. Universe in 1965 and is a two-time winner of the IFBB Mr. America title. He was inducted into the Joe Weider Hall of Fame in 1994.

Frank Zane Shares Tips On Avoiding Overtraining

Zane shared his tips and secrets to making gains in the gym and it includes to avoid overtraining using these steps:

  • Do just enough training to get results
  • Take a few days off when feeling overtrained
  • Increase carb intake

“Doing more training than necessary can result in excessive soreness and overtraining. If you ever get overtrained, your energy level will drop, you’ll feel very tired, your muscularity won’t be as sharp, and you may lose a few pounds.”

Frank Zane continued to explain how he handled feelings of being overtrained.

“When I’m feeling overtrained, I take a few days off from training and increase my carbohydrate intake slightly.”

Zane has said in the past that he believes he would be in Classic Physique if he competed today. His overall build and structure would fit better in that division rather than with the mass monsters in Men’s Open. He persevered and had a successful career in bodybuilding spanning two decades. He has won the Mr. Olympia title three times and is one of only three IFBB-certified pros ever to defeat Arnold Schwarzenegger.
