Actor Colman Domingo Builds his Best Physique at 56 with New Focus on Longevity
Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo is proving that fitness after 50 doesn’t have to be about getting as massive as possible. In a recent feature with Men’s Health, Domingo opened up about shifting away from the obsession with muscle size and instead focusing on longevity, consistency, mobility, and feeling good in his body at 56.
Best known for his powerful performances in projects like Euphoria, Rustin, and Sing Sing, Domingo has become one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. He’s currently portraying Michael Jackson’s father Joe Jackson in “Michael” now in theaters. But behind the scenes, he revealed that his fitness mindset has evolved dramatically with age.
“One of the best things I ever did,” Domingo explained, was to stop trying to get “bigger and bigger.” Instead, he began training in a way that made him feel athletic, lean, energetic, and sustainable long term.
Colman Domingo’s Current Workout Philosophy
Rather than chasing bodybuilding-style mass, Domingo now focuses on movement quality, recovery, and maintaining a physique that supports his demanding acting schedule. Domingo is the founder of SecondHalf Fitness, a fitness company that caters to the 50-plus crowd. He says that his sessions now are often cardio based. Because getting bigger isn’t what he’s aiming for any more.
According to the Men’s Health feature, his training now includes:
- Strength training with moderate weights
- Functional movement work
- Mobility and flexibility exercises
- Consistent cardio sessions
- Recovery-focused routines
- Yoga and Sauna
- Training for longevity instead of sheer size
Domingo reportedly trains consistently throughout the week but avoids the burnout mentality that often comes with trying to constantly bulk up. Instead, he prioritizes feeling strong, healthy, and camera-ready year-round.
Domingo Focuses On Nutrition Without Extreme Dieting
The actor also detailed a more balanced relationship with food and nutrition. Instead of crash diets or extreme bulking phases, Domingo emphasizes moderation and clean eating habits that are sustainable.
His approach reportedly centers around:
- Lean proteins
- Vegetables and nutrient-dense meals
- Staying hydrated
- Eating for energy and recovery
- Avoiding overly restrictive dieting
Domingo explained that aging changed the way he views health entirely. Rather than punishing his body, he now treats fitness as a form of self-respect and long-term maintenance.
Not as many greasy cheesesteaks for this Philly native although Domingo says he no longer counts calories, he “barters with them.”
Fitness After 50 Is Changing
Domingo’s comments reflect a growing shift among celebrities and athletes over 50 who are prioritizing mobility, recovery, and sustainability over chasing maximum muscle mass. Instead of trying to train like they did in their 20s and 30s, many are embracing smarter programming and balanced nutrition.
That doesn’t mean Domingo looks any less impressive. In fact, many fans feel the actor is currently in the best shape of his life.
As Domingo put it, the goal now is simple: feel good, move well, and stay healthy for the long run.
