The grandest event of the year for the bodybuilding world is undoubtedly the Mr. Olympia competition. A tournament of the best bodybuilders in the world, invited to compete against each other to decide who the number one athlete would be for that year. We all know it, we all love it, there’s no way you could call yourself a bodybuilding fan and not agree. But as prestigious as this event is, it’s not without it’s controversy.

The 2001 Mr. Olympia was considered, by some, to be controversial. Why? Because they thought Jay Cutler deserved to win the competition rather than the eventual winner and all time great Ronnie Coleman. It’s an argument that a few die hard fans still discuss today. Being honest, it was a pretty close contest between two of the best bodybuilders in history. Truth of the matter is that Coleman had a weaker start than Cutler to begin with in the prejudging, but made up for it with an impressive showing in the posing and pose down rounds. This is what ultimately led Coleman to victory.

As fans we’ve come to understand the preparation that takes place not just in the months and weeks ahead of the competition, but directly backstage as well. This behind the scenes, backstage look at the 2001 event shows just what the athletes had to go through while competing on the highest stage of the sport. In the video you’ll notice legends like Ronnie Coleman, Dexter Jackson, and many others sharpening things up before the competition. Take a look.

It’s not easy being a high level bodybuilder. In the midst of this slight bit of controversy, it’s easy to forget the fact that the event was made particularly exciting because of how well put together all the bodybuilders were. Each man had put in the work to get to their goals and it showed in their physiques. Who knows? Maybe Coleman and Cutler will settle things in 2016?
