Ronnie Coleman explains the reason he still trains at 3am at Metroflex Gym every day.

It’s been long stated and known that Ronnie Coleman is one of the hardest working bodybuilders that ever lived. Even though he has long since been retired, that same mentality exists for him to this day. Despite his many injuries and surgeries – he still trains daily. Not only that but he still maintains his vigorous training schedule of working out at 3am at Metroflex gym. But why does he do it so early in the morning? In our latest GI Exclusive Vault interview, Ronnie Coleman explains the real reason he prefers to train at 3am every single day.

The timing of when you train at the gym can have some small benefits or drawbacks to your overall results. That being said, there is rarely a guide or expert who will tell you to train at three in the morning. In fact, for most people that is impossible. Most gyms wouldn’t even be open at that time.

Of course, the modern age of chain gyms do provide some options of 24/7 open gyms. So should you be considering training overnight instead of sleeping? That seems to be the general tactic Ronnie Coleman takes. It’s a schedule he has kept for years and still dedicates himself towards to this day. He often hits Metroflex Gym at 3am. But is there a specific reason why?

During our conversation with Ronnie Coleman during the filming of Ronnie Coleman: The King – we asked him that very question. A large chunk of his interview was unable to make it into the final film. That’s why we are now releasing unseen and extended clips from the uncut interview.

It turns out that Ronnie Coleman does have a very specific reason for training at 3am. It’s not due to some sort of trick for bigger gains. It’s because it’s the one time of the day he can focus on getting the work done without interruptions.

It’s no secret that Ronnie Coleman still trains at Metroflex gym. His name has helped make the gym a tourist attraction for some bodybuilding fans. That means they also know they can go visit Metroflex Gym and hope to see Ronnie Coleman in the flesh.

Ronnie Coleman describes how after he became a Mr. Olympia legend, it became harder to train effectively at Metroflex Gym during normal hours. Fans would want to take photos with him or have a quick conversation. They wanted to meet their idol.

Ronnie had no problem with meeting fans. But he also saw the gym as a time to work – not socialize. It’s part of that hardcore work ethic that made him a legend in the first place. So ultimately, he decided to start training after the gym was officially closed. It closed a midnight – but Ronnie was friends with gym owner Brian Dobson. So he was given keys to the gym and unlimited access to train whenever he wanted.

Most regulars wouldn’t shuffle out of the gym until around 1am. So Ronnie would make sure to get some sleep and head over to the gym by 3am when there was no chance of anyone else being there. Then he would focus on one thing and one thing only – training his ass off.
