Arnold Schwarzenegger believes glutamine is an overrated supplement in terms of muscle building.
There are many supplements that help build muscle and enhance recovery. In his daily newsletter, Arnold Schwarzenegger has discussed the best and the worst. During a recent edition, the bodybuilding great went into the category of overrated and glutamine was near the top of the list.
“Despite its longevity, glutamine has repeatedly failed to live up to its hype as a recovery and muscle enhancer.”

Arnold shared research from the National Library of Medicine. This is where it was studied if glutamine played a role in building muscle, recovery, or weight loss.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Shares Thoughts On Glutamine
When conducting research on glutamine, it was found that it had “no significant effect on muscle performance, body composition, or muscle protein degradation.”
“On paper, if more glutamine gets into your muscle cell, then hypothetically, it can support muscular growth and recovery. However, your intestines and liver — which regulate distribution to the rest of your body — love glutamine and instead use it all to feed intestinal and immune cells.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger has also spoken on creatine in the past. He shared that creatine monohydrate is the best type of creatine to take.
There are many myths that come with creatine and Schwarzenegger spoke on two in particular — bloating and absorption. Creatine causes bloating because of the water being retained, which could cause your weight to increase. Despite seeing the scale rise, do not worry about the extra pounds.
There were other factors that made glutamine beneficial but it did not have to do with performance in the gym.
“There’s evidence that glutamine supports immune function and gut health and could reduce infections after surgery.
While it has some specific uses, glutamine is overrated and not worth your money if you use it as a performance, muscle-building, weight loss, or recovery supplement.”
