Ivan Makarov Crushes 476 KG Deadlift in Prep For Final World Record Attempt

Ivan Makarov crushed a 476 KG deadlift for reps in prep for his final show.

Russian powerlifter Ivan Makarov recently smashed through a 476 KG deadlift for two reps ahead of his final attempt at the world record. Having come close to breaking the record held by Hafthor Bjornsson, an astonishing 501 KG, Makarov has been the only serious challenger to potentially become the next deadlift king.

One of the three major lifts featured in powerlifting competitions, the deadlift is perhaps the most arduous of them all. Each lift carries its own particular challenge. The bench press primarily focuses on upper body strength while the squat is a total body movement. The deadlift is similar to the squat in that it requires the entire body to accomplish the movement. With that said, the deadlift utilizes the posterior chain including the hamstrings, glutes, and back. The lifter must also utilize their arms and core to brace themselves to clear the weight from the ground.

As one of the masters of the deadlift, Ivan Makarov has cultivated quite a powerful physique. During his tenure as a professional athlete, Makarov has acquitted himself as a pillar of the strength sports community. But while he may have been impressive in an average powerlifting competition, Makarov has showcased a love and determination for conquering the deadlift (conventional). He is so motivated in fact that he has attempted time and again to shatter the deadlift world record.

Ever since Hafthor Bjornsson broke the world record in 2020 with a massive 501 KG deadlift, Ivan Makarov has stepped up to the plate as one of the only legitimate contenders to try his hand at making history. While he may have come close to matching the record, hefting an impressive 483 KG, Makarov has never been able to surpass 501 KG.

Final World Record Attempt

Now it appears that after three years’ worth of attempts, Ivan Makarov is giving one final go at the record. Makarov will make his final attempt at glory this September before retiring from professional competition. His final attempt will take place at the 2023 Giants Live Deadlift World Championships.

“As many people already know, on September 2nd will be my last performance as a professional athlete, and then a new life, new plans for mega transformation, coaching, and blogging.”
