Lee Labrada Talks Longevity, Says Son Hunter Labrada Will Retire Young After Winning Mr. Olympia

Lee Labrada thinks his son Hunter will retire young.

Bodybuilding legend Lee Labrada recently gave an interview discussing how he’s able to keep in great shape despite being 62 years old. The brother also spoke on the fact that his son Hunter Labrada doesn’t plan on completing into older age. The bodybuilding legend who dominated the field during his heyday from the ‘80s into the ‘90s Is still in top form sporting a shredded frame and impressive musculature for his age.

Many wonder about longevity, how to attain it and how to maintain it over a long period of time. In order to do so there is no magic pill. There is no shortcuts. What is required is hard work, dedication, and a tried and true routine. There’s no such thing as getting in bed out of shape and overweight to rolling out of bed with a six pack and then peak physical condition. Sacrifices must be made in order to attain a superior physique. Lee Labrada said as much in a recent interview.

Winning the Mr. universe and night of champions titles in 1985 and 1986, Lee Labrada set himself apart as one of the most talented bodybuilders in the Golden Era. He cracked the top five of the Olympia throughout his illustrious career. And in order to attain all those gifts he had to put in some considerable work.

“I get some kind of exercise every day. Weight training is my heart. That’s what I love.”

While those good habits I have worked wonders for Lee Labrada, high level bodybuilding simply isn’t something one can do forever. There comes a time when one has to hang it up and walk into the sunset. Rather than overstay his welcome Labrada retired in 1995 after competing for 10 years as a pro. According to Labrada, his son Hunter may consider doing the same with his own career.

Lee Labrada spoke on gear cycles and how his son’s is conservative by today’s standards.

“Of course it gives you pause okay. It’s like running the engine in the car at second gear at 60 miles an hour right — you don’t want parts to start breaking.

“It’s hard on the system. I’m familiar with that but there are things that can be done to mitigate health-wise and to his credit, he has. He monitors. He has a regimen that is very conservative by the standards today. That gives me more peace of mind.”

Lee Labrada also spoke on his son’s career. From Labrada’s understanding, he seems convinced that Hunter will retire right after accomplishing his goal.

“I told him the same thing that I told my wife. There’s life after bodybuilding. Anything that you do now, understand what the long-term consequences are. You want to make sure that you’re mitigating those things so that you’re body is not a wreck the day you choose to retire.

“I think that the help aspect [of the sport] has definitely percolated in [his life]. He’s one of those bodybuilders who is going to retire at a relatively young age once he’s won the Mr. Olympia.”
