Lou Ferrigno Details his Amazing Shoulder Surgery Recovery at 74
Who knew one of the Hulk’s superpowers is aging in reverse? At 74 years old, bodybuilding icon Lou Ferrigno is proving that age doesn’t have to slow down strength, intensity, or discipline. The legendary star of The Incredible Hulk recently opened up about recovering from major shoulder surgery while sharing his philosophy on longevity, joint health, and staying physically active deep into retirement.
Ferrigno revealed that he underwent shoulder surgery last December, explaining that doctors had to reattach “95%” of a damaged tendon. Despite the serious procedure, the bodybuilding legend says his years of training and maintaining elite conditioning helped speed up his recovery dramatically.
“Stay active, feel young,”
A Golden Era Titan Who Helped Define Bodybuilding
Few figures loom larger in bodybuilding history than Ferrigno. Standing 6’5″ and weighing nearly 285 pounds in his prime, Ferrigno became one of the most recognizable physiques of the Golden Era. He famously battled legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, and Franco Columbu on stage during bodybuilding’s explosive rise in popularity during the 1970s.
Of course, Ferrigno’s fame extended far beyond bodybuilding circles after he became the face of The Incredible Hulk television series from 1978 to 1982. Long before CGI superheroes dominated Hollywood, Ferrigno physically transformed himself into Marvel’s green giant through sheer muscle mass and conditioning.
That crossover success helped bring bodybuilding into mainstream culture and inspired generations of lifters who followed.
Lou Ferrigno’s Advice for Staying Young
Ferrigno says the key to longevity isn’t complicated. According to him, consistency matters far more than chasing shortcuts.
The bodybuilding legend explained that he still trains four to five days per week, watches his diet carefully, and avoids overdoing supplements or medications.
Here are some of the biggest principles Ferrigno credits for his longevity:
- Train consistently, even into older age
- Stay physically active every week
- Eat in moderation
- Avoid overindulging in supplements or medication
- Maintain a positive mindset
- Focus on mobility and range of motion
- Listen to your body during recovery
Ferrigno also stressed the importance of maintaining muscle and joint health as the body ages. He explained that tendons become more brittle over time due to reduced blood flow, which makes exercise and mobility work even more important after age 60.
Ferrigno Says Fitness Helped Him Bounce Back Faster
Ferrigno’s says staying in shape before surgery directly improved his rehabilitation afterward.
According to Ferrigno, many people struggle for months trying to regain normal movement after major joint procedures. But because he stayed active and physically prepared, he was able to regain range of motion much faster.
He even claimed that his current conditioning allows him to feel decades younger than his actual age.
“I’m 74 now because I’m exercising so well, once a night, eat, that’s why I can look like a person that’s 55 or even 45. Men my age who don’t exercise look older, especially when it comes paying attention to the body. Maximum health, maximum mental attitude, and maximum physical effort.”
Still Training Like a Bodybuilder
Even in retirement, Ferrigno continues to embrace the same training mentality that built his legendary physique. During his bodybuilding career, he became known for brutally intense workouts, especially heavy overhead pressing movements that helped develop his massive shoulders and frame.
Ferrigno has repeatedly emphasized that bodybuilding gave him more than muscle. He believes the discipline of training shaped his confidence, mindset, and work ethic for life.
Now at 74, the bodybuilding icon continues to show why consistency, moderation, and relentless discipline remain timeless principles both inside and outside the gym.
