With just over a week until the competition, Rayno Nel has dropped out of the 2026 Arnold Strongman Classic
In strongman, few rising stars have made an impact as quickly as Rayno Nel. The South African powerhouse has built a reputation for explosive strength, speed, and composure that rivals those of the elites he clashes with. Many fans had circled March 6–7 on their calendars, expecting to see him challenge the world’s best at the Arnold Strongman Classic in Columbus, Ohio. However, less than two weeks before the contest, Rayno Nel was forced to withdraw, and the reason caught the strongman off guard—one of the worst scenarios to face before a grand event: contracting salmonella.
Sudden Illness Forces Withdrawal
News of Nel’s absence first surfaced through Laurence Shahlaei, widely known as Big Loz, and his wife Liz, who shared details in a YouTube update after speaking directly with Nel.
According to their report, Nel had recently been hospitalized after contracting salmonella. The illness immediately cast doubt over his Arnold appearance, but he initially monitored his condition before making a final decision.
Ultimately, the determining factor was dramatic weight loss. Nel reportedly dropped 37.5 pounds in a very short span. Faced with that reality, he chose to step back rather than compete below his standard.
The Rise of a Modern Strongman
One of the most amazing recent tales in sports is Nel’s quick rise. He played rugby before Strongman, where his speed and strength made him stand out. That path was abruptly cut short by a severe knee injury, but it also led him to focus on strength sports. This change proved revolutionary.
When he won the World’s Strongest Man title in 2025 during his first appearance, it was his big break. He was immediately promoted from prospect to world contender after the win, which made him the first rookie champion since 1997. He won the Strongman Champions League World Finals later that season, adding another significant victory. Since 2023, Nel has competed in 12 major contests and won nine of them. This is an amazing track record for a man who yearned for the crown at the Arnold Classic.
Nel wasn’t the only person to drop out from the 2026 Arnold Classic, as other contestants like Hafthor Bjornsson, Tom Stoltman, and Luke Richardson have cancelled their appearances.

Looking Ahead
Even though missing the Arnold is a setback, Nel has a bright future ahead. Withdrawals from illness are annoying but only last a short while, especially for athletes who have shown resilience. Recuperation, regaining lost body weight, and regaining full strength capacity are now the top priorities.
It might not be long before Rayno Nel returns to the platform at full strength if his current trajectory is any guide. The strongman world will be closely observing him when he does.
