Jay Cutler Breaks Down What Steroids he Used
Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) have long been a significant but often unspoken aspect of bodybuilding. Despite their prevalence, most bodybuilders tend to keep their PED use private. However, bodybuilding legend and four-time Mr. Olympia winner Jay Cutler has broken the silence in an exclusive interview with IFBB pro Greg Doucette.
Our team at Generation Iron is going to take a look.
The Reality of Steroid Use in Bodybuilding

“There’s a lot of misconception about what we actually do,” Cutler revealed. “I’ve never really spoken about it openly. Nowadays, people are curious and want to know, ‘What do the pros actually take?’”
Cutler’s honesty provides rare insight into the steroid cycles he followed during his competitive years, especially between 2000 and 2005.
Jay Cutler’s Steroid Cycles and Contest Preparation
Cutler explained his routine: after the Mr. Olympia competition, he would take a 12-week break before starting a new cycle for the Arnold Classic. After the Arnold Classic, he’d rest for another 8 to 12 weeks before beginning preparations for the next Olympia contest.
Types of Steroids Used
Throughout the year, Cutler cycled through a variety of performance-enhancing drugs, including exotic compounds such as:
- Parabolan
- Winstrol Amps
- Masteron
- Equipoise
- Testosterone Propionate
He highlighted the importance of switching steroids every four weeks and managing side effects with anti-estrogen medications like Nolvadex and Arimidex.
Jay Cutler’s Current Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Approach

While Cutler no longer uses anabolic steroids, he follows a medically supervised Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) regimen. He addressed common misconceptions about his dosage:
“Some say I’m on 500 milligrams a week, but no one needs that much for HRT,” Cutler said. “I typically use between half a cc to one cc weekly, rarely exceeding that amount.”
He also shared that his current cycle includes Sustanon, which helped him gain significant muscle mass.
The Risks of Steroid Use: What You Need to Know
Despite the muscle gains, steroid use is associated with serious health risks. According to Dr. Leon Creaney of Manchester’s Institute of Health and Performance, a Danish study found that anabolic steroid users have a mortality rate three times higher than non-users.
Common Side Effects of Steroid Use
Steroid users are more likely to experience:
- Male breast development (gynecomastia)
- Infertility and erectile dysfunction
- Cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease)
- Atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm)
- Pulmonary embolism (blocked arteries)
- Liver damage and jaundice
- Severe acne
Final Thoughts
If you’re considering steroids to enhance muscle definition or size, it’s essential to weigh the potential health dangers. While bodybuilders like Jay Cutler may have used PEDs to reach elite levels, the risks involved are significant and should not be taken lightly.
