Four-time Arnold Classic champion Flex Wheeler was rushed to the hospital after experiencing extreme pain during Olympia weekend

Bodybuilding legend Flex Wheeler has revealed that he was hospitalized for nine days after experiencing severe pain during the week of the 2026 Mr. Olympia. The four-time Arnold Classic champion shared the frightening health scare in an Instagram video on October 20, explaining why he was unable to attend bodybuilding’s biggest event in Las Vegas. Fortunately, Wheeler says he is doing much better and has received a new prosthetic leg that has significantly reduced his pain.

Wheeler, widely considered one of the greatest bodybuilders never to win the Mr. Olympia, has endured numerous health challenges since retiring from competition. The 61-year-old underwent an emergency amputation of his right leg in 2019 following serious circulatory complications. He has also battled kidney failure and blood clots over the years.

Despite those challenges, Wheeler has remained involved in bodybuilding, making appearances at major competitions and offering guidance to the next generation of athletes.

Flex Wheeler Reveals He Was Rushed to Hospital During 2026 Olympia

In his October 20 Instagram update, Wheeler apologized to fans and Olympia organizers for his unexpected absence from the competition.

“First and foremost, I want to apologize to my fans and the Mr. Olympia committee. I picked up my VIP tickets Thursday, and unfortunately, I started experiencing some extreme pain, to the point where Thursday night, I had to be rushed to the hospital. They ended up keeping me for nine days.”

Wheeler did not provide specific details about what caused the extreme pain or why doctors decided to keep him hospitalized for more than a week.

However, he delivered some encouraging news about his recovery, revealing that he has received a new prosthetic leg that has made a dramatic difference in his daily life.

“It was pretty bad, but the good thing is that I’m good now. I have actually a new leg now that feels a lot better. My pain level is way, way down, probably the lowest it’s ever been since my amputation.”

Perhaps even more encouraging, Wheeler revealed that he has already returned to training and recently completed his first leg workout in more than a year.

“Today, we were actually able to do our first leg workout. It’s probably been over a year and a half since I did legs.”

Flex Wheeler’s Long History of Health Challenges

Wheeler’s latest hospitalization is another chapter in a lengthy battle with serious medical issues.

Nicknamed “The Sultan of Symmetry,” Wheeler built a legendary bodybuilding career during the 1990s, winning four Arnold Classic titles and finishing runner-up at the Mr. Olympia three times.

He is remembered for his exceptional proportions, conditioning, and aesthetics, competing against some of the biggest names in bodybuilding history, including Ronnie Coleman and Dorian Yates.

However, his life outside competition has been marked by significant health struggles.

Wheeler underwent a kidney transplant in 2003 after battling kidney disease.

He has spoken candidly about the physical and emotional toll of losing his leg, including the challenges of learning to walk with a prosthesis and struggling with depression.

Through it all, Wheeler has continued to maintain a presence in the bodybuilding community. He has worked with competitors on posing and presentation, including Classic Physique standout Wesley Vissers, who finished fourth at the 2026 Mr. Olympia.

While Wheeler was understandably disappointed to miss this year’s Olympia, his latest update offered plenty of reasons for optimism.

After nine days in the hospital and years of struggling with pain following his amputation, the bodybuilding icon is back in the gym and feeling more comfortable with his new prosthetic leg.

For Wheeler, simply being able to torch leg day again represents a significant personal victory.
