A study suggests that sexual activity may not negatively impact performance.
There is a lot that has been said about if you should have sex or masturbate before a workout. This is a major superstition in fighting as boxers will historically abstain before big fights. Many believe that it will negatively impact your performance in the gym and this has become a wide-known theory — but has it been wrong all of this time?
A new study shared by Physiology and Behavior suggests that masturbation before a workout might boost athletic performance.

What Is The Study?
A research paper laid out the study where 21 male athletes in their early 20s were tested to figure out whether or not sexual activity before a workout impacted performance. These male athletes were well-trained having competed in many activities such as basketball, volleyball, boxing, and distance running.
Each competitor went through two exercises where they completed a cycling test an isometric handgrip strength test. One was done 30 minutes after masturbating and one was the following week where they had abstained from sexual activity. Blood samples were collected to look at muscle damage and inflammation while diet, sleep, and routines were matched closely between each test.
Final Results
The results went against popular belief. Athletes ha better endurance and showed a minor increase in grip strength when working out after masturbation. Testosterone and cortisol levels were also higher and they showed reduced muscle stress. According to researchers, this improved performance came from higher sympathetic nervous system activity due to their aroused state.

Increases Testosterone Levels In Men
Contrary to the popular belief, masturbating or having sex can shoot up your testosterone levels. Most people think when they ejaculate, they’re wasting their precious testosterone. This is not the case, your T-levels have nothing to do with ejaculating.
Testosterone is the male hormone which is responsible for the development of sex organs in men. Test is also the reason men develop muscles while women, who have estrogen (the lady hormone), can’t build the same muscle mass as men. There are many ways to improve your testosterone levels.

Wrap Up
Ultimately, despite the findings of this study, masturbation before a workout will likely do little to impact performance. All that matters is how you feel in the gym and how you believe you will have the best performance. If masturbation leads to a better workout for you, then that is what you should do. If you believe that if you abstain that you will perform better, that is the way to go.
