What’s it like inside the East Coast Mecca?

The History of Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym
Located on Long Island, the gym combines an enormous selection of strength equipment with decades of bodybuilding history. It has also attracted some of the biggest names in the sport, helping cement its reputation as one of the most legendary bodybuilding gyms in the United States.
The story of Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym begins with Bev Francis herself.
Originally from Australia, Francis became one of the most accomplished strength athletes of her generation. Before becoming famous in bodybuilding, she established herself as an elite powerlifter, winning six world championships between 1980 and 1985. She was also widely recognized for her extraordinary strength.
Francis later became a major figure in women’s bodybuilding. Her appearance in Pumping Iron II: The Women helped introduce her to an even wider audience and contributed to discussions about muscularity and the evolving image of female strength athletes.
In 1986, Francis and Steve Weinberger opened a small bodybuilding gym in Syosset, New York. What began as a roughly 5,000-square-foot facility would eventually grow into one of the most recognizable gyms in the world.
The facility expanded over the years and went through several names. It eventually became Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym in 2005, continuing to build on the reputation established during its early years.
Today, the gym occupies more than 35,000 square feet and continues to operate as a dedicated strength and bodybuilding facility.
Why Is Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym Called the East Coast Mecca?

The term “Mecca” is not used lightly in bodybuilding.
For decades, Gold’s Gym Venice in California was considered the ultimate destination for bodybuilders. The gym became synonymous with the golden era of bodybuilding and attracted generations of champions.
Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym developed a similar reputation on the opposite side of the country.
The gym’s hardcore atmosphere, enormous equipment selection and connection to professional bodybuilding have made it a destination for serious lifters. Publications have previously described the facility as the East Coast’s “Mecca,” highlighting its significance within the bodybuilding community.
Part of the appeal is that Bev’s does not feel like a conventional commercial fitness center. The focus is on training.
The gym’s official website describes it as a legendary hardcore gym, and that identity has remained central to the facility throughout its history.
A Massive Selection of Bodybuilding Equipment
One of the biggest reasons lifters travel to Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym is the equipment.
The facility currently spans more than 35,000 square feet and includes free weights, dumbbells, plate-loaded machines, cable machines, selectorized machines and cardiovascular equipment.
The gym’s equipment selection has historically included multiple squat racks, numerous bench press stations and extremely heavy dumbbells. Previous features have highlighted dumbbells reaching as high as 220 pounds, along with a regulation-size boxing ring and a wide variety of machines from different manufacturers.
That variety is important for bodybuilders.
Rather than relying on a handful of machines, Bev’s offers lifters the opportunity to experiment with different pieces of equipment to find the movements that best suit their individual bodies and training styles.
For someone following a bodybuilding program built around progressive overload, that can make a significant difference. A chest workout, for example, can include free-weight presses, machine presses, cables and isolation movements without requiring the lifter to leave the facility.
Where Bodybuilding Legends Have Trained
The gym’s reputation has been strengthened by the athletes who have walked through its doors.
Over the years, Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym has welcomed numerous professional bodybuilders and celebrities. Past reports have highlighted athletes including Jay Cutler, Ronnie Coleman, Kai Greene and Dorian Yates, among others.
That history gives the gym an atmosphere that is difficult to replicate.
For an aspiring bodybuilder, training in the same environment where elite competitors have prepared for major competitions can be motivating. It provides a connection to bodybuilding history that goes beyond simply having access to good equipment.
The gym has also been associated with major bodybuilding events and the broader New York bodybuilding scene, further establishing Syosset as an important location for competitive bodybuilding.
More Than Just a Hardcore Gym
Despite its reputation as a hardcore bodybuilding facility, Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym is not exclusively for professional competitors.
The gym offers equipment and training options suitable for a wide range of lifters, from people beginning their strength-training journey to experienced bodybuilders preparing for competition.
That distinction is important.
You do not have to be a professional bodybuilder to appreciate a serious training environment. Someone interested in building muscle, increasing strength, improving conditioning or simply escaping the atmosphere of a typical commercial gym can find plenty of options at Bev’s.
The difference is the culture.
The facility has developed its reputation around people who come to train rather than simply socialize. Muscle & Fitness has previously described the gym as a place where serious lifters can train while still benefiting from a friendly and supportive environment.
The Posing Room and Bodybuilding Culture

Competitive bodybuilding requires more than building muscle.
Athletes must also learn how to present their physiques on stage. Posing, conditioning and presentation can have a major impact on competition results.
Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym includes a dedicated posing room as part of its facilities, reinforcing its connection to competitive bodybuilding. The gym’s official tour also showcases bodybuilding memorabilia and other elements of its history.
Walking through the facility is therefore almost like walking through a piece of bodybuilding history.
The walls, equipment and training environment contribute to the feeling that this is a gym built around the sport itself rather than a generic fitness facility.
Is Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym Worth Visiting?
For serious bodybuilding and strength-training enthusiasts, Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym is absolutely worth putting on the list of gyms to visit.
It offers something that can be difficult to find today: a massive training facility built around the culture of lifting.
The combination of extensive equipment, heavy free weights, bodybuilding history and a reputation for attracting elite athletes makes it particularly appealing to experienced lifters.
Even if you are not preparing for a bodybuilding competition, training at Bev’s can be an experience in itself.
For many lifters, visiting legendary gyms is part of experiencing the culture of the sport. Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym has earned its place on that list.

The Legacy of the East Coast Mecca
There are plenty of gyms where you can lift weights. There are considerably fewer gyms that become part of bodybuilding history.
Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym is one of them.
From its beginnings as a small 5,000-square-foot bodybuilding gym to its current 35,000-plus-square-foot facility, Bev’s has grown alongside the sport while maintaining its hardcore identity.
Its connection to Bev Francis, Steve Weinberger, professional bodybuilding and generations of serious athletes has transformed the Syosset facility into one of the most recognizable bodybuilding gyms in America.
For anyone passionate about bodybuilding, strength training or gym culture, the Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym represents more than a place to train. It represents the idea that a gym can become part of the identity and history of an entire sport.
That is why, decades after opening its doors, the East Coast Mecca continues to attract lifters from around the world.
