Magazine Dreams Review: A Complex Drama Rooted in Bodybuilding
Goob kicks things off with a powerful discussion on Magazine Dreams, the critically acclaimed drama starring Jonathan Majors. He and Vlad agree: the movie is an impressive piece of filmmaking. It’s a rare character-driven drama that dives deep into the dark corners of ambition, mental health, and identity—all through the lens of competitive bodybuilding.
Goob praises the film for showing a realistic, unglamorous side of bodybuilding. This isn’t your usual feel-good sports story. Magazine Dreams digs into the pain, obsession, and psychological toll that can come with chasing physical perfection. And Goob appreciates that.
But it’s impossible to talk about the film without addressing the elephant in the room: Jonathan Majors. The actor was convicted of domestic violence in 2024, and the shadow of that controversy looms large. Goob notes that even Majors himself has acknowledged the impact of the scandal, saying he doesn’t expect any major awards for the role despite the performance being one of his strongest.
Spoiler Alert: Mike O’Hearn’s Unexpected And Shocking Role In Magazine Dreams
It was well known, at least in the bodybuilding world, that the film took some effort to represent bodybuilding and bodybuilding physiques as realistically as possible. This led to pro bodybuilders such as Breon Ansley, Brandon Hendrickson, and Mike O’Hearn having roles in the film.
Mike O’Hearn, with a wide variety of past acting experience, has a bit of a more involved role in the film compared to the others – representing a pro bodybuilder that Jonathan Majors’ character, Killian, greatly admires.
But what may come as a shock to many bodybuilding fans is just how far the drama goes for Mike O’Hearn’s character and his interactions with Jonathan Majors. (Note: Spoiler alert warning for those who have not yet seen the film).
Goob discusses and reacts to an explicit scene in the film where Mike O’Hearn’s character takes advantage of Jonathan Majors’ character – utilizing his position of power to have sex with him.
Goob was shocked at just how dramatic of a role Mike O’Hearn ultimately had – and the level of intimacy and darkness that he had to bring himself through in order to portray someone who would take advantage of another individual in such a way. It’s rare to see a bodybuilder fully transition into acting in such a way – with only Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno doing it successfully prior.
Yes, Mike O’Hearn has been acting for quite a while – but to Goob’s knowledge, this is likely the most challenging role that O’Hearn has likely ever done. And it was performed very well within the drama of the film. it was a shocking moment both within the drama of the film as well as for Goob as a fan of bodybuilding.
Pushback from the Bodybuilding Community
Vlad brings up a different angle: some in the bodybuilding world feel that Magazine Dreams portrays the sport negatively. Goob pushes back hard on this. He argues the movie isn’t about bodybuilding as a whole—it’s about one deeply troubled character who just happens to be a bodybuilder.
Goob argues that the film isn’t trying to say this film represents every bodybuilder. It’s showing that people like this do exist in the sport. Goob goes on to say that many people in bodybuilding know someone who’s like this. It may not be what all bodybuilders are like – but it’s certainly a story and a personality that is present in bodybuilding.
He also makes a broader point about storytelling: good films explore the extremes—the highs and the lows. Sanitizing the story to make the sport look better wouldn’t just be dishonest, it would also make the film boring.
BBL Trainers: The Scam That Just Won’t Die
Shifting gears, Goob turns his attention to one of his favorite targets: BBL trainers.
What is a BBL trainer? These are coaches—usually online influencers—who secretly undergo Brazilian Butt Lift surgery but claim their glutes are 100% natural, grown purely through training. They use their “results” to sell workout programs, misrepresenting what’s actually achievable through exercise alone.
Goob explains how he spots them. He’ll go through Instagram timelines and look for sudden, dramatic improvements in glute size—something that can’t happen naturally in just a few months. Then he checks for posting gaps, often during recovery periods. And if he finds plastic surgeons or BBL clinics following the account? That’s the smoking gun.
He likens it to a male trainer saying he only trains arms and claiming all gains are from biceps curls alone. “It’s laughable,” Goob says. “Nobody only trains one body part. That’s not how fitness or coaching works.”
BBL Gummies: The Fitness Industry’s New Low
If BBL trainers weren’t ridiculous enough, Goob says we’ve now hit rock bottom with BBL gummies.
Yes, there are companies selling gummies that supposedly help you grow your glutes. According to Goob, this is pure nonsense. “Spot improvement” is a myth. You can’t grow a specific body part by eating a supplement. No pill, powder, or gummy will target just one area of your body.
Goob even called out one of these companies publicly—and got blocked for it.
The only way to suddenly change the size or shape of a muscle without training, he says, is through synthol or site enhancement oils. These are substances some bodybuilders inject into muscles to make them look bigger. Not only is this considered cheating in most circles, but it’s also dangerous. The oil doesn’t break down naturally and can cause long-term health issues.
The Harambe System: A Surprise Endorsement
One of the more surprising moments in the episode comes when Goob gives props to something he initially thought was a joke: The Harambe System.
Named after the gorilla whose death became a viral meme and cultural reference point, The Harambe System is a training program, app, and equipment brand aimed at making fitness more accessible. Its mission? Honesty, health, and community—not quick fixes.
Goob admits he thought it was a scam at first. But after doing research, talking to the creators, and trying the products himself, he’s changed his mind. He now owns equipment from The Harambe System and recommends it—especially for those who want a solid home workout option.
“It’s not going to replace the gym,” he says. “But it’s a legit tool. I like it. It works.”
Wrap Up
This episode of The Goob Show captures what makes the podcast so popular in the fitness world. Goob doesn’t chase trends or play politics. He speaks from experience, calls out scams, and gives honest opinions—even when they go against the grain.
From the artistry of Magazine Dreams to the absurdity of BBL gummies, Goob keeps it real. He’s not afraid to get into the weeds, whether it’s breaking down the competition format in bodybuilding or dissecting the ethics of fitness marketing.
And while his style can be blunt, there’s no denying the value of having someone in the space who isn’t afraid to say what others won’t.
