Jay Cutler Talks Lifting Belts

Jay Cutler shared that during his career, he used lifting belts during the heavy exercises.

“Early in my career, I used a lifting belt for all my heavy lifts. When I was training and knowing I was going to put some torque on my waist, especially with the one-arm dumbbell rows, T-bar rows, deadlifts, squats. That was always a movement when I used a belt.”

“I preferred the leather belt where you can really strap it up. I would focus on using a belt during those heavy movements. Remember, you have to strengthen your core so I wouldn’t suggest it for all the exercises but definitely on your heavy day, lift days.”

Cutler relocated to California in 2000 to further his bodybuilding career, California was known for breeding bodybuilders, as they would train at the infamous Gold’s Gym. During the early 2000s, he signed endorsement deals with supplement brand MuscleTech and debuted his own line of athletic gear, Cutler Athletics. Throughout his career, Jay competed in dozens of competitions, winning nearly half of them or finishing in the top three.

Cutler doubles down on the notion that gym goers should pick and choose the exercises to use a belt.

“I would focus on any bent-over movement or something where you’re putting a lot of pressure on the back or the lower spine. Just make sure it’s form fitting, make sure it’s tight, and make sure it’s secure before you go into the exercises.”
