Mike Sommerfeld is up-and-coming in Classic Physique and plans to hit 2025 hard!
Mike Sommerfeld has emerged as one of the biggest competitors in Classic Physique moving forward. He plans to take the stage in the 2025 Arnold Classic in Columbus come March and is focused on making big-time improvements. Recently, Sommerfeld crushed a leg workout led by bodybuilding legend Jay Cutler.
Sommerfeld finished as the runner-up to Chris Bumstead during the 2024 Olympia. With Bumstead announcing his retirement, this puts Sommerfeld in line to compete for the title right away in 2025.
Sommerfeld competed at the amateur level in 2014 and burst onto the scene in the IFBB in 2019. That year, he competed at the Romania Pro. Following his debut, Sommerfeld’s progress was swift and impressive. He soon entered a number of professional competitions, steadily improving his rankings. His hard work paid off with wins at events such as the Xtreme Bodybuilding & Fitness Pro and the Poland Pro Supershow.
Sommerfeld was under the guidance of Cutler during this leg workout where both shared tips.
Mike Sommerfeld’s Brutal Leg Workout
This leg workout consisted of eight movements that targeted all areas needed for growth:
- Seated Leg Curls
- Standing One-Leg Curls
- Stiff-Leg Dumbbell Deadlift
- Lying Leg Curls
- Leg Extensions
- Leg Press
- Barbell Walking Lunges
- Hip Adduction Machine
The session began with Sommerfeld and Cutler hitting hamstrings. This included different variations of leg curls. During standing leg curls, Cutler shared his methods to get the most out of the movement.
“You see this little pause right here? I don’t lengthen the tissue totally but I keep that tension but I just kind of lock that spot right there. I’d have to come here to get a full contraction.”

Cutler continued to discuss his plan of attack during his bodybuilding career.
“When I was training, I would train five total days but I would do three on, one off, two on, one off. I know what it’s like. Sometimes you don’t want to take those days off. I do cardio seven days a week.”
The session moved onto quads, where Sommerfeld and Cutler hit leg extensions and leg presses.
“I’m trying to push my knees outside and put all my pressure to my baby thumb on the outside, try to avoid too much teardrop.”
Mike Sommerfeld has a chance to get to the top of Classic Physique after taking a major step in 2024. During this workout, he focused on legs and he also explained his training split to throw it in during the week.
“Every set I count is at least straight failure until I can’t move the weight. What I do every leg day, eight sets total, but I train upper, lower, upper, lower, upper, lower, rest. Like three leg days a week, eight sets.”
